NORMAN, Okla. – Senior Kendra Combs and junior Abbie Pierson of the West Virginia University gymnastics team competed as individual event specialists in the Second Round of the NCAA Norman Regional Championships inside the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Oklahoma, on Thursday.
 
Pierson represented the Mountaineers on balance beam and floor exercise, while Combs competed on floor exercise.
 
"I'm very proud of Abbie and Kendra, who both did an outstanding job representing WVU today," WVU coach Jason Butts said. "Their performances today showed just how strong the future of the program is and that has me very motivated to plan for next year's season."
 
Pierson competed in the first session of Thursday's Second Round, rotating with Boise State for beam and California for floor. She competed on beam first, earning a 9.9 to score just shy of her career best. The mark placed her in a tie for third overall after both sessions. Moving on to floor, the New Kensington, Pennsylvania, native matched the total to record her sixth 9.9 total on floor exercise this season.
 
In the second session, Combs competed on floor, rotating with Arkansas. She earned an impressive 9.925 on the event, marking her highest floor total since Feb. 24, when she also reached the mark. The total was good enough to put her in a tie for third place overall at the end of the night.
 
"This was an incredible way to wrap up the 2022 season on a high note," Butts added. "The future is bright, and the road to 2023 starts tonight."
 
With Thursday's competition, the Mountaineers concluded their 2022 campaign. West Virginia finished the year with a 13-5 overall record, along with an 0-2 mark in Big 12 Conference action. The squad's season high of 196.650 at the Big 12 Championship marked its highest team score since 2018, as well as a program-best total at the conference meet. The score also helped WVU finish in third place for the first time since 2017, when it also finished third.
