How Alex Golesh is the complete opposite of Butch Jones - atozsportsnashville.com

Former Tennessee Vols head coach Butch Jones was a slogan machine during his five seasons on Rocky Top.

Every year it was a new slogan — “6-3 effort”, “DAT way”, “brick by brick”, etc.

Now, there’s nothing wrong with slogans — football coaches have been using them for decades at all levels.

But for whatever reason, Jones’ slogans were particularly maddening (maybe because they weren’t accompanied by an SEC championship).

Fortunately for Vol fans, it appears that Tennessee’s new staff isn’t big on slogans.

Offensive coordinator Alex Golesh made it a point on Tuesday to distance himself from cheesy slogans and clichés.

“I’m not a big slogan guy or acronym guy,” said Golesh while talking to reporters on Tuesday. “We use one word: attack. An attack legitimately from the outside looking in. What attack means, and it can be quantified, but what attack means is playing harder than your opponent for longer. And within that is the tempo, within that is how we play.”

Slogans — or a lack of slogans — don’t win or lose games. But I think it’s important fans connect well with the coaching staff. There has to be some cohesiveness between the coaching staff and the fan base. It shouldn’t feel like a forced relationship.

A quick way to ruin that relationship would be to repeat the mistakes that Jones made during his time at Tennessee.

It’s still too early to determine what kind of relationship Heupel and his staff will have with the UT fan base. But so far, I’d say it’s off to a nice start.
