Quick-thinking colleagues saved a man's life after he was crushed by a falling tree in he was trying to clear from power lines.

The man in his late 30s was chopping a tree in a cherry picker in Robertson, southwest of Wollongong, after Sunday's huge storm.

Suddenly the tree fell and 'effectively crushed him', giving him major head and chest trauma and sending him into cardiac arrest.

Colleagues lowered him to the ground and began CPR, then used a defibrillator to restart his heart before paramedics arrived.

The man was rushed from Roberson Nature Reserve to Liverpool Hospital by helicopter about 2pm on Monday in critical condition.

Locals said the man was breathing when he was loaded on to the chopper thanks to 'miraculous' work by his colleagues and paramedics.

NSW Ambulance Inspector Gavin Wood said the storm made trees hazardous and pleaded with people to be careful.

'Trees and shrubbery around the place is being coming quite dangerous and unstable the drought has dried a lot of the forest and woodlands out,' he said.

'We ask that people be mindful and vigilant.'
