Queensland factor worker loses an EYE after being glassed by a colleague at his Christmas party - Daily Mail

Man loses an EYE after being glassed by a colleague following a very boozy Christmas party

  • Brent James McDonald, 39, pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm on Monday
  • He glassed a colleague who was staying with him believing he was stealing
  •  The man lost an eye and has been left unable to work following the 2018 attack

A factory worker lost his eye after he was glassed by a colleague following a night of drinking in the early hours of Christmas Day.

Brent James McDonald, 39, pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm at Southport District Court, on Queensland's Gold Coast on Monday over the 2018 incident.

The victim needed to have his eyeball removed following the glassing.

McDonald and two others had returned to him home after a night of drinking, the court was told, according to Sunshine Coast Daily.

He went to the bathroom at 2am to find his victim asleep on the couch and asked him to leave because he thought he was stealing money.

Prosecutor Matt Hynes said McDonald hit the other man in the back of the head before a scuffle took place.

He then hit the man with a glass bottle he was holding in his hand.

'It shattered on impact and left significant damage,' Mr Hynes said.

'The complainant has now had the eyeball removed.'

McDonald was breath tested at 8.30am the same day and returned a result of four times the legal limit of 0.05.

He was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison, and is eligible for parole in a year.

McDonald's defence barrister said the defendant had turned to alcohol after his 14-year-old marriage broke down.

Judge Katherine McGinness said the victim can no longer work due to his eye being removed.

'You mistakenly believed the complainant was trying to steal from a work colleague as they lay passed out,' she said.
