TAMPA — Mayor Jane Castor thanked her former department colleagues for being transparent and working for the best interests of the city during union negotiations Monday.
Castor, the city’s police chief from 2009 to 2015, credited the deal with the police union, in part, to each side trusting the other.
“You all know me. That’s the way I operate," Castor told union negotiators as they gathered in her conference room to formally sign a three-year labor deal. "I’m upfront. It’s not the back and forth, back and forth. My heart will be always be in TPD."
Ninety-three percent of union members voted to ratify the deal. The agreement follows similar smooth deals with the city’s general employees and the firefighters union. All three pacts will proceed to City Council for approval.
Police Benevolent Association President Darla Portman said she was happy with how negotiations went.
“It was very smooth," Portman said after the signing ceremony. “We got more than I thought we were going to get and I was surprised that we got what we wanted.”
The big ask in negotiations, Portman said, was establishing a health trust that enables police and fire unions to obtain their own health coverage.
“We got the figures down and they saw all the evidence we had," she said. “They were good with it.”
It helped that Castor was the former police chief, Portman said.
“She understood that health care was very important to us. She was very helpful."
