Joe Biden's former Democratic colleagues from his 36 years representing Delaware in the Senate are still bullish on his chances for the 2020 nomination but acknowledge he needs a win soon.
“It's kind of surprising when he lowered expectations in New Hampshire. It signaled to me that he was not going to be in the top two. Joe Biden needs a comeback state,” Sen. Dick Durbin, an Illinois Democrat, told the Washington Examiner hours before results started pouring in from New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary.
Biden’s fourth-place finish at the discombobulated Iowa caucuses and his misstep on the campaign trail in New Hampshire after calling a young, female voter a “lying, dog-faced pony soldier,” along with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’s wide lead in the New Hampshire primary polls, has prompted Biden to move on to South Carolina.
Sen. Tom Carper, a Delaware Democrat and Biden supporter, hailed the idea.
“I remember when Bill Clinton ran for president," Carper told the Washington Examiner, recalling the 1992 cycle, when he was a 10-year House member seeking Delaware's governorship, with Clinton at the top of the ticket that fall.
"He didn't do real well and then ran in the New Hampshire primary, and he didn't do so well. And then caught fire in places like South Carolina, Nevada, and other states.”
Carper said the multitude of states set to vote by March 3 would help Biden's chances.
“This is a marathon, not a sprint. And I have great affection for the folks in Iowa, and I have great affection for the folks in New Hampshire," Carper said. "I spent a fair amount of time there in his last couple of months — lovely, wonderful people, but they're not America in its entirety.”
The Delaware Democrat said it is expected that Sanders will do very well in places such as Iowa and in places such as New Hampshire, which shares a state line with Vermont.
“It's a home game for him. I'd expect him to blow it out,” Carper said.
