Anna Paulina Luna Says Colleague 'Threatened' Her Over McCarthy Stance - Newsweek

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

Republican Representative-elect Anna Paulina Luna has said she was threatened by another member of the House of Representatives because of her opposition to electing House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy as speaker.

Luna spoke to Steve Bannon, former adviser to former President Donald Trump about an "inappropriate" phone call she had received from a female member of the House in a video shared to Twitter on Friday by PatriotTakes, which describes itself as "researchers monitoring and exposing right-wing extremism."

The recently elected congresswoman will be sworn in on January 3 when the new Republican majority will attempt to elect the next speaker. McCarthy is facing stiff opposition to his bid for the speakership from within his own party.

Luna is opposed to McCarthy's election and Bannon asked her about the reaction to her stance.

Luna has said a sitting member of the House made a "threatening" phone call to her about the upcoming election for Speaker of the House. Alex Wong/Getty Images

"I got a very inappropriate phone call on Thursday where basically another member—this was a couple of weeks ago, actually—another member had called me basically to whip votes for the speaker's race and ultimately ended up threatening me," Luna said.

"And I let that female member know that I wasn't going to basically be threatened," she went on. "I don't think that I need to put that person's name out there because I think that they are probably embarrassed about doing that."

"But the fact is, is that's not uncommon, I think, to have happen and ultimately I'm not going to be bullied," Luna said.

In response to the video, PatriotTakes added in another tweet: "There are only so many female members [of] the House conference. Was this MTG?" referring to Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene. Some Twitter users also speculated that the person in question was Greene.

PatriotTakes later tweeted: "Which 'female member' threatened incoming Republican House member Anna Paulina Luna?" and many of the responses again named Greene.

However, Luna did not name the person who allegedly threatened her and she also named Greene among members of the House she respected during her conversation with Bannon.

In a statement issued to Newsweek on Saturday morning, Luna said: "The member that called me was NOT MTG. Marjorie came down and helped me in my primary and is also a fellow member of the Freedom Caucus. She would never do that to me."

Greene has offered her public support to McCarthy's bid to be elected speaker next week, putting her at odds with other House conservatives, including Representatives Lauren Boebert and Matt Gaetz.

Republicans will have 222 seats when the new House meets on January 3 but there is strong opposition to McCarthy among a minority of the incoming GOP members.

He will need 218 votes to secure election but McCarthy's allies are reportedly expecting multiple ballots in what could be the most hotly contested speaker's race since 1923.

McCarthy's team is reported to be looking at the new House rules package as a way to reach a deal with opponents and offer concessions to those who currently say they will not vote for McCarthy.

However, the rules package will not be passed until after a new speaker is elected and it's not yet clear how McCarthy will overcome opposition in the closely divided House where every vote is likely to count.

Update 12/31/22 10.10a.m. E.T.: This article was updated to include a statement from Anna Paulina Luna.

Husband Catches Wife Cheating With His Former Colleague Through Baby Monitor While At Work - Hollywood Unlocked

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

Oop! An enraged husband found out his wife had been cheating on him thanks to the baby monitor that was linked to his phone. According to reports, Marek Fecko was at his job when he heard his wife getting it on with his former colleague at their family home, prompting him to head straight home and confront the pair.

Apparently, he suspected that his wife had been cheating for about five months. But on this particular occasion, his assumptions became reality when she forgot that the microphone was still activated on the baby monitor, which she usually turned off when he was at work. Once Marek reached his home, he confronted his wife and her apparent lover before pulling out a knife and threatening to hurt the man.

The couple appeared at Carlisle Crown Court where Marek admitted to possessing a knife in a public place but contended that his actions simply stemmed from anger over his wife’s infidelity. Prosecutor Tim Evans said, “The unhappy result of that was that his wife commenced an affair. That affair was with a former work colleague of Mr. Fecko.”

“At the time of the offenses, October 31, the affair had been going on for five and a half months,” he added. Marek is said to have come across messages on his wife’s phone earlier this year that appeared to suggest she was seeing someone else while he was busy working, but he decided to overlook the texts and continue his relationship with his longtime partner.

It was also mentioned that the pair had a baby monitor placed in their marital bedroom, which is where the wife ended up getting caught, despite having turned the baby monitor around but forgetting that the device was still picking up sound.

“It was connected by way of sound and vision to Mr. Fecko’s phone. Within a short time of him leaving the house, his wife and (victim) were in the marital bedroom,” Tim added.
In the end, Judge Nicholas Barker ordered Marek to an 18-month community service program with 120 hours of unpaid work, as well as a restraining order, barring him from any contact with his former colleague.

Neither Marek nor the victim has been in contact since the altercation.

Jim Jordan for Speaker? Gaetz Urges GOP Colleague to Challenge McCarthy - Newsweek

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

Representative Matt Gaetz urged Representative Jim Jordan on Saturday to challenge House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy in the House speaker race as conservatives continue withholding their support for the GOP leader.

Gaetz, of Florida, is one of the House Republicans who has expressed intentions to vote against McCarthy, of California. A group of the GOP conference's right-leaning members are pushing for more conservative leadership. But because Republicans only hold a narrow majority in the House, McCarthy can afford only a handful of defectors.

McCarthy is currently facing a challenge from Arizona Representative Andy Biggs, but the majority of the conference has rallied behind the California Republican. Biggs' challenge is viewed as a long shot, but he could receive enough votes to derail McCarthy's bid.

Gaetz suggests Jordan as McCarthy alternative

In a Twitter post on Saturday, Gaetz floated that Jordan, the Ohio congressman who currently serves as the vice chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, as a potential alternative.

"All I want for Christmas is @Jim_Jordan to realize he should be Speaker of the House!" Gaetz tweeted.

However, Jordan has not signaled any plans to challenge McCarthy and has previously voiced support for him.

Earlier in December during an appearance on Steve Bannon's War Room podcast, Gaetz said he would not back McCarthy because he did not block Democrats from passing budget bills, pushing for immigration bills that included amnesty, and not doing more to hold government officials accountable who opposed former President Donald Trump.

"There are things Kevin McCarthy did to erode the trust of the members he needs to vote for him if he wants to be speaker," the GOP lawmaker said.

McCarthy's opponents have also listed other demands for their support including a return to single subject bills, 72 hours for a final bill text, leadership not getting involved in primary elections, the appointment of conservative Republicans on the House Rules Committee, and a commitment to not raising the debt ceiling, among others.

What Jordan Has Said About House Speaker Race

Despite Gaetz pushing for Jordan to challenge McCarthy, the Ohio Republican has been complimentary of the GOP leader following the midterms. During a Fox News interview in November, he praised McCarthy for keeping "our team together."

"What I've said all along is the guy who gets you to the Super Bowl, even if it's a game in overtime, gets to coach the game," Jordan said, expressing doubt that anyone would challenge McCarthy.

Gaetz Previously Floated Jordan as Potential Speaker

Jordan has long been named by conservatives as a potential House speaker.

Gaetz touted Jordan as "the hardest working and most talented member of the Republican House Conference" after a recording of the minority leader saying he urged Trump to resign after the January 6, 2021, riot was reported.

"The conference never believed that Donald Trump should resign, so to have a leader so far outside of the conference is itself a problem," Gaetz said of McCarthy during an April Newsmax appearance.

Newsweek reached out to McCarthy and Jordan's offices for comment.

Leading Brazilian economist derides Jewish colleague with antisemitic tropes - The Times of Israel

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (JTA) — Jewish groups in Brazil are demanding a retraction after a prominent economist questioned the loyalty of a Jewish economist during an interview streamed by a widely viewed Brazilian news organization.

The comments were directed against Ilan Goldfajn, a Brazilian-Israeli economist who was recently elected president of the Inter-American Development Bank, which promotes economic growth in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Paulo Nogueira Batista Jr., a former executive director of the International Monetary Fund, said during the interview on Jornal GGN that Goldfajn is hostile to the government of Brazilian president-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and included his Jewish background as one of the reasons. Batista’s argument invoked multiple antisemitic tropes about Jewish power and dual loyalty.

“He is essentially a financier, connected to the US Treasury, to the Jewish community. He is actually Jewish-Brazilian, born in Haifa, Israel. And the Jewish community has a strong presence in the US Treasury, in the Monetary Fund, in international organizations, not only in private banks,” Batista said. “As a Brazilian, all he has is his passport.”

Batista also mocked Goldfajn’s last name, calling it “unpronounceable” for not having a Portuguese origin.

Goldfajn, 56, is a former president of Brazil’s Central Bank. He left Israel at an early age and was raised in Rio de Janeiro, where he attended a Jewish day school and is an active member of the Brazilian Jewish community.

Batista made the statements on December 16, but they only gained widespread notice on December 24 when several Jewish groups issued condemnations. Several other non-Jewish figures followed suit, turning the episode into a firestorm in Brazilian media this week.

The Brazilian Israelite Confederation, the country’s umbrella Jewish organization, was the first to respond.

“Batista resorts to old antisemitic clichés used by fascists and racists to vilify a Brazilian citizen who contributes so much to our country,” the group said in a statement posted to social media.

The Sao Paulo Jewish federation, which represents half of Brazil’s 120,000 Jews, followed suit.

“Associating Jews with money and power takes us back to the worst moments in human history that culminated in the persecution and death of our ancestors,” the federation said in a statement.

A note by B’nai Brith Brasil compared Batista’s comments to the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, the infamous falsification of European antisemites. And the Jews for Democracy nonprofit called the episode “a clear example of left-wing conspiracy antisemitism.” (Lula is left-wing and was narrowly elected to replace Brazil’s right-wing president, Jair Bolsonaro, a Christian nationalist who has been a strong supporter of Israel.)

The Brazil-Israel Institute demanded a public apology from Batista and the show’s host, Luis Nassif, who later tweeted that he didn’t react because he considered the statement xenophobic, but not antisemitic.

“The statements are antisemitic as in an antisemitism handbook, establishing the classic relationship between Jews and money, triggering the thesis of a Jewish plot and even repeats logic that removes from the Jews the possibility of being Brazilian,” the Brazil-Israel Institute said.

Fluent in Hebrew, English, Portuguese and Spanish, Goldfajn has a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as well as bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. In the mid-1990s, he was a professor at Brandeis University.

In Brazil, he has served as chief economist at Itau, Brazil’s largest private bank, and deputy to the bank governor of Brazil, as well as adviser to the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

In 2018, Goldfajn was named central banker of the year by the British magazine The Banker due to his successful performance at the helm of Brazil’s Central Bank, taming the country’s annual inflation.

After son, Karnataka teacher attacked by colleague dies in hospital - The Indian Express

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

Guest teacher Geetha Barikeri, who was attacked with a shovel by her colleague Muthappa Yellappa Kuri on December 19 at Hadali Government Primary School in Gadak disrtict, died around 11:30 am on Thursday due to severe head injury, Dr Ramalingappa Antartani, director of KIMS Hubballi, said.

Antartani said Geetha was brought to the hospital in an unconscious state and was suffering from low blood pressure (hypotension). She was put on a ventilator, and spent three days in the ICU, but eventually succumbed due to severe internal bleeding and cerebral edema (brain swelling), he said.

“We were trying to stabilise her blood pressure with injection support as there was no chance for a surgical intervention. She died due to severe head injuries. The postmortem will be conducted after the police complete the formalities,” the KIMS director said.

Her son, Bharath Barikeri, was killed in the attack. The accused beat the 10-year-old boy, twirled him and smashed the boy’s head against a cement pillar, before flinging him from the first floor of the school building. Kuri, also a temporary teacher, had also attacked the headmaster of the school, Sanganagouda Patil.

According to the preliminary investigation conducted by Gadag police, Kuri and Barikeri (both guest teachers) were in an alleged extramarital relationship. Kuri was jealous after suspecting that Barikeri was getting close to the headmaster of the school, during a school trip a month ago.

“Kuri’s intention was to attack anybody linked with Geetha after coming back from the school trip. He was jealous of Geetha’s alleged relationship with the headmaster,” superintendent of police (Gadag) Shivaprakash Devaraju had said.

The accused was nabbed by the police on Tuesday.

Geetha is survived by her husband, a farmer, who met with an accident a year ago and is in a crippled state. The accused has been charged under Section 302 (punishment for murder) of the Indian Penal Code.

Don Lemon Breaks Down While Announcing CNN Colleague’s Death - Yahoo! Voices

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

CNN

Revealing to CNN viewers that longtime investigative correspondent Drew Griffin had passed away after a long battle with cancer, CNN This Morning anchor Don Lemon broke down in tears on Monday morning.

Griffin, who spent nearly two decades with the network’s investigative unit, died on Saturday. During his time at CNN, he was repeatedly honored for his reporting, winning the Murrow, Emmy, and Peabody awards. His dogged investigative work regularly had a profound real-world impact.

His investigation into sexual assault allegations against Uber drivers, for instance, resulted in the company introducing new safety features. Additionally, a lengthy probe into medical care delays at the Department of Veterans Affairs—which contributed to the deaths of patients—prompted the VA secretary to resign.

“Drew’s death is a devastating loss to CNN and our entire profession,” CNN CEO Chris Licht said in a statement. “A highly acclaimed investigative journalist, Drew’s work had incredible impact and embodied the mission of this organization in every way.”

Lemon, who was apparently very close with Griffin, was tasked with breaking the news to CNN audiences on Monday morning.

“So, we have some very sad news to tell you today,” the veteran anchor said, immediately fighting tears. “Our colleague and friend and longtime distinguished CNN journalist Drew Griffin has passed away. Drew was with the investigative unit of CNN based in Atlanta since 2004.”

After running down Griffin’s accomplishments, Lemon said the program would honor the award-winning reporter later in the hour before growing extremely emotional.

“I’m sorry,” he said as co-host Kaitlan Collins consoled him.

“I know this is tough for you. You said he was one of the first people you met at CNN,” she added as Lemon began sobbing.

“I’m sorry,” he cried, taking off his glasses and wiping tears from his face.

“Drew was such a gifted storyteller,” a solemn Collins concluded before sending the show to a commercial break.

Lab worker who throttled and cut throat of female colleague jailed for life - Yahoo News UK

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

A murderer who throttled and cut the throat of a trusting female work colleague he had been dating for less than a month has been jailed for life with a minimum term of 23 years.

Ross McCullam, who had admitted manslaughter before his trial but denied murder, was convicted in little more than 90 minutes by a jury at Leicester Crown Court on Monday.

He was jailed at the same court on Friday in front of more than 20 members of 23-year-old HR worker Miss Newborough’s family, by Judge Philip Head who described the killing as a “truly dreadful” crime.

He said of “stellar” Miss Newborough: “It was her dreadful misfortune to become involved in a relationship with you.”

McCullam, of Windsor Close, Coalville, Leicestershire, had claimed he acted only in a “blind rage” after a loss of control which Miss Newborough had inadvertently triggered during oral sex, after an incident at his parents’ home on August 6 2021.

The porn-obsessed 30-year-old lab technician, who met Miss Newborough, of Nuneaton, Warwickshire, at brickmaker Ibstock where both worked, sought to blame his attack on undiagnosed PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) caused by unreported childhood sexual abuse.

But he was undone by his own web of lies, including mounting an elaborate cover-up in which he dumped her body in undergrowth and changed his blood-stained clothes, and also texted her to say “you were amazing” and asking if she had got home safe.

During her victim impact statement Miss Newborough’s older sister Claire Newborough, addressing a weeping McCullam in the dock, told him: “I hope she haunts you.”

Lab worker Ross McCullam who murdered colleague Megan Newborough branded 'a monster' by her sister - Sky News

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

A lab worker who strangled and slashed the throat of a colleague he had been dating for less than a month has been branded a "monster" by the victim's sister, who told him: "I hope she haunts you".

Claire Newborough told Ross McCullam as he sat weeping in the dock that he was "an unpredictable menace" who had "tricked, murdered and brutalised" her younger sibling.

The porn-obsessed 30-year-old was jailed for life with a minimum term of 23 years in front of Megan Newborough's family at Leicester Crown Court on Friday.

McCullam had admitted manslaughter but was convicted of murder following a six-week trial, during which he was branded a "sadistic killer".

Police described him as a "wolf in sheep's clothing" and believed he would have "gone on to kill again".

McCullam and Ms Newborough, 23, had been seeing each other for about a month when he murdered her last year.

He throttled her then cut her throat with a carving knife, later telling police he did so "to make sure Megan was dead".

He then dumped Ms Newborough's body in undergrowth next to a country lane in Leicestershire before trying to cover his tracks by changing his clothes and leaving a voicemail on her phone telling her that he loved her.

Sentencing McCullam for a "truly dreadful" crime, Judge Philip Head said of "stellar" Ms Newborough: "It was her dreadful misfortune to become involved in a relationship with you."

The victim's older sister, Claire Newborough, said in her impact statement read to the court: "She was cruelly dumped, topless, in a cold, dark field, where the defendant thought she would never be found.

"The thing Megan hated most was feeling cold, and as her big sister, the very thought of her so cold and alone for all those hours, has destroyed me."

Turning to McCullam, who was sitting crying a few yards away, she said: "The definition of a monster is cruel, frightening and evil - and it is to my relief the defendant has been recognised as a monster.

"You are an unpredictable menace, a danger to women, obsessed with serial killers."

Ms Newborough added: "She always thought she could fix people, but fixing evil people is not possible.

"You tricked her, murdered her, brutalised her and left her in such an undignified way.

"I hope she haunts you."

Her father, Anthony Newborough, wept as he said the family had lost their "beautiful treasured daughter Megan, in such horrific circumstances".

He added: "We are a large and close family who have been ripped apart by one evil human being.

"It is like a horror film, but it is a true story, Megan's story, our story.

"These events have caused us so much pain and anguish we struggle that Megan, in her last moments, would have been so frightened.

"She was loved by so many and touched so many lives for those she met and left a great gaping hole that can never be filled.

"She was our princess and the defendant with his evil hands, his strength, together with his evil mind has taken her away from us forever."

McCullam, who met Ms Newborough at the brickmaking firm Ibstock where they both worked, claimed he had killed her in a "blind rage" as a result of undiagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder triggered by unreported childhood sexual abuse.

But the prosecution dismissed his as a "pack of lies" and said McCullam murdered Ms Newborough because of his anger at being sexually impotent immediately prior to the attack.

Prosecutors pointed to his having ordered tadalafil pills off the internet, used to treat erectile dysfunction.

He searched the internet for pornography and looked up details of serial killers including Levi Bellfield, Ian Huntley and Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe, in the hours after he disposed of Ms Newborough's body.

Knowing she was dead, he called Ms Newborough's phone and left a voice message saying: "I had a fun time earlier."

On remand, McCullam had also bragged to a cellmate about using the knife, and suggested he would use his mental health as a "tool" at trial.

In another incident, he was overheard on a prison landing by a guard laughing as he told other inmates "If you carry on like this, you'll end up like Megan".

Another prison warder also heard him joking openly with other inmates about the killing, telling them "if I had gone a bit further I'd have taken her head off".

Jury acquits former St. Louis police officer of raping a colleague - St. Louis Post-Dispatch

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

ST. LOUIS — A jury on Thursday acquitted a former St. Louis police officer of raping his colleague while she was unconscious after a night out at a strip club over a decade ago.

After roughly an hour of deliberation, jurors ruled in favor of Torey Phelps, 39, whose attorney argued the woman made up the rape allegations because she was facing a vicious rumor mill at the police department and hoped she could cash in on a potential lawsuit.

"At the end of the day, this is what honesty looks like," Phelps said after the verdict, gesturing to the defense's side of the courtroom, "and this is what deception looks like," he said, gesturing toward the prosecution.

The woman's case relied almost entirely on her testimony and people to whom she confided after the incident.

She testified that she blacked out one night in either 2009 or 2010 after having just one or two drinks with Phelps and another colleague, Lafeal Lawshea, 39, at the Bottoms Up strip club in Brooklyn, Illinois.

People are also reading…

She said she came-to briefly when she was in a car on the way back to Lawshea's house. Then she woke up with Phelps on top of her in a guest room, she said. Lawshea was also there, she said.

"Why are you going to let him do this to me?" the woman said she asked Lawshea.

The next morning, she said she woke up naked in bed with Lawshea. She was angry and embarrassed, she said, so she didn't go to the hospital or report the incident.

But Phelps' attorney, Scott Rosenblum, questioned the woman's narrative and motive, pointing out several discrepancies between her court testimony, previous depositions and an interview with detectives.

He also noted his client, Phelps, had been consistent in his own statements. He said he'd gone to the club that night and the woman hit on him. They went back to the house, and she came in the bedroom where he was sleeping and performed sex acts.

Rosenblum said the woman became embarrassed after rumors started swirling at the police department, so she made up a new narrative.

She reported the crime to an investigator in 2020 and started receiving counseling for post-traumatic stress disorder. She said she faced animosity and was called a "snitch" by her fellow officers for reporting the incident.

In 2021, Phelps was charged alongside Lawshea, who is facing his own accusations of raping two women, sexually assaulting a civilian police officer in 2019 and contacting one of the victims after an investigation began.

Prosecutor Jeremy Crowley argued jurors should believe the woman, who was telling the story of the most traumatic moment of her life.

Rosenblum pointed to a lack of physical evidence and discrepancies in the woman's statements in making their decision.

"I think we exposed the case for what it was, which was a bunch of lies," Rosenblum said as he left the courtroom on Thursday.

Amazon worker shot, colleague returns fire killing suspect outside facility: Police - WTVD-TV

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

An Amazon contract worker was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after a gunman allegedly opened fire at an Amazon facility in Arizona Wednesday, according to police.

The alleged gunman was shot and killed by a second Amazon contract worker who returned fire, investigators said.

The incident occurred in the parking lot of an Amazon Flex facility in Chandler, Arizona, around 9:30 a.m. local time, police said.

The suspect, identified as Jacob Murphy, 29, who allegedly fired multiple rounds at one of the contracted workers before a second contract worker returned fire, Sgt. Jason McClimans of the Chandler Police Department told reporters at a news conference.

The unidentified wounded worker was taken to a local hospital in "life-threatening condition," according to McClimans. Murphy was not employed by Amazon and was declared dead at the scene, police said.

"At this time, police cannot determine if the actions of the third male resulted in Murphy's death or if Murphy took his own life," the police said in a statement.

The second unidentified contracted worker who fired at the suspect was cooperating with the investigation, McClimans said.

The investigation was ongoing.

"We do not know what led up to this," he said. "We believe this was confined to one suspect only."

The Amazon facility and local schools were locked down when the shooting took place, according to police.

"We weren't sure if this was an active shooter, but within 20 minutes, we were able to lift those lockdowns," McClimans said.

Bryton Bobbitt, a contracted Amazon worker, told ABC affiliate KNXV he was getting ready for a normal workday when the shooting occurred.

"All of a sudden, just hear pop, pop, pop. [I] start looking around, like where did that come from? A few of our other workers started running," he told the affiliate. "I was already in my work van, I put it in gear and tried to find a safe place and got out of here."

A spokesman from Amazon told ABC News that operations at the facility were suspended following the incident and all employees and partners were sent home with pay.

"We're deeply saddened by this senseless act of violence in our parking lot. We're working closely with law enforcement as they investigate and are focused on supporting our team during this difficult time," Richard Rocha, an Amazon spokesperson, said in a statement.

Los Angeles City Councilperson Calls for Colleague’s Resignation Following Physical Conflict with Protestor - The People’s Vanguard of Davis

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com
PC: pbs.org

By Jack Sandmeyer

LOS ANGELES, CA – Los Angeles City Councilperson Nithya Raman has called for the resignation of her colleague, Councilmember Kevin de León, after the former influential state lawmaker’s recent physical conflict with a protester last Friday evening.

While participating in local toy giveaway in Lincoln Heights, de León was approached by political activist, Jason Reedy, who urged the council member to resign his position because of his now public comments of homophobic and racist nature.

The 10-second video that has spiraled through social media shows the encounter between the two men which resulted in de León apparently pulling Reedy down onto a table before forcing him into the side of a wall, according to some witnesses.

However, another video appears to show the activist with his arms up in the direction of the local lawmaker. De León claims Reedy swung at him.

Police took battery complaints from both individuals but no one was arrested.

Following the actions of de León, Councilperson Raman expressed genuine concern regarding the lawfulness of the Los Angeles City Council official “first by his racist and homophobic rhetoric, then his ignoring calls to resign from the city and leaders nationwide, and now his engaging in a violent conflict with a protestor.”

Councilmember Raman and political activists in Los Angeles have made it clear that de León’s recent comments coupled with this new incident should warrant his removal from office.

“Protestors are not elected officials. “Those of us who are endowed with the public trust, especially in a city where that trust has been devastated, have an inviolable responsibility to de-escalate dangerous situations — and to never lash out with violence,” argued Raman.

In response to calls for resignation, de León’s office maintains that Reedy and his supporters were the sole initiators of the conflict and that de Leon still has no plans to resign anytime soon.

Despite the councilperson’s claim, Raman has made her thoughts clear, charging, “I have said that Kevin de León should resign immediately from the day the recording of his racist conversation was released. This incident only deepens that conviction.”

Following the incident, De Leon attended an LA City Council meeting Saturday morning, his first appearance since the release of his controversial conversation between fellow city council members Nury Martinez and Gil Sedillo.davisvanguard.networkforgood.com”

Woman Explaining Why Colleague's Relationship Rule Is 'Stupid' Cheered - Newsweek

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

A 29-year-old female employee has found herself in hot water at work over a comment made to another employee. User u/wolfeye1985 has asked the r/AmItheA****** subreddit if she is an a****** "for using a joke about sexuality to imply my co-workers 'boundary' with her boyfriend is stupid?"

She updated the post to reveal that she has been called in for an HR meeting.

A 2021 study by engagement platform Ten Spot found that 70 percent of all workers and 86 percent of Gen-Z say they have experienced bullying or prejudice at work.

The original poster (OP), who describes herself as bisexual and "femme and straight," explains that she has only recently got to know her fellow employees because of restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. She explains how a co-worker was talking about a 'girls trip' she was planning, to which the OP replied by talking about her plans to go away with a male friend.

"She immediately raised her eyebrows and said, 'wow that's wild that your boyfriend would let you go on a trip alone with another guy,'" the OP wrote. "The colleague then revealed that she and her boyfriend don't allow each other to be friends with the opposite sex, and it means 'they have a deeper level of trust.'"

The OP wrote that she responded by saying: "'Huh I wouldn't understand—that would be tough for my girlfriend and I since we are bisexual. I guess we wouldn't be able to have any friends at all,' I said it in a teasing tone and laughed."

The OP describes how her colleague then "started to look more angry than embarrassed" and said, "to be honest, I don't really think the workplace is somewhere to be discussing sexuality at all."

The OP explains that she feels conflicted about the disagreement.

"On the one hand, I don't think I'm the a****** at all, and that it's her fault for assuming my sexuality in the first place and that she was telling me about her relationship which means it was perfectly acceptable for me to talk about mine.

"On the other hand, my girlfriend said I was out of line to make that joke and I clearly embarrassed her and she was just being defensive—as anyone would if they felt their relationship was attacked."

Newsweek spoke about the awkward interaction with Amanda Rue, consent expert and founder of The Shift Work Shop, a human resource consultancy offering sexual harassment prevention and anti-sexist training.

"As we are rebuilding our relationships with in-person workplaces it's vital that we remember our best practices for connecting with co-workers in the office," she says. "We know friendship can strengthen employee morale, but it's important to remember that we can easily cross lines of comfortability in an attempt to form these relationships.

"For the most part, conversations around private relationships, including sharing judgments around other's relationships should be kept out of the office. We are there to focus on the work at hand and can find other shared interests and conversation points that exclude our personal approach to sex and relationships.

"It's important to note that sexual harassment, including hostile workplace, is based on the complainants perspective and you may not know what could make somebody feel uncomfortable regarding [their] private lives. It's best to have consent to engage in this conversation, first and foremost, to ensure all parties are comfortable regarding the conversation, but best case is to change the topic and refrain from sexualized conversations in the workplace."

Reddit users backed the OP.

NidorinoBeano said: "She already disclosed her sexuality to you by talking about her BF and you're right, her boundary is stupid, it's not a deeper level of trust it's a lack of trust they have."

User Revolutionary-Heat10 wrote: "She was the first one to judge your relationship by saying that it was wild that your bf would let you go on a trip with another man. So she can judge but you cannot?"

Right_unreasonable commented: "'I trust you so much that you can never be alone with a woman. Except your mother. Because I TRUST you'—OP's co-worker."

Man Getting Disabled Female Colleague Suspended Cheered: 'Not a Free Pass' - Newsweek

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

A Reddit user has been voted "not the a**hole" "for telling a colleague their disability is not a free pass to be an a****** and getting them suspended."

User niffedofficeworker describes themselves as a 29-year-old male who has recently started "a new position at the beginning of November with a decent sized law firm in my city." They explain that despite enjoying their job, they began hearing "horror stories around a member of the office we will call 'J.' I've heard that the last two people that took this position were basically bullied out of the post by J and that anybody who makes any complaints to HR basically get told to put up and shut up for two reasons."

A study from March 2022 conducted by Quality Logo Products found that 90 percent of American employees report having a co-worker that annoys them. Fifty-seven percent of workers say they have considered quitting their job because of a co-worker, and 55 percent report that even while working remotely, co-workers are still annoying them.

The Reddit user explained: "Firstly J, despite not being the most popular person in the office, is very good at what she does to the point the company sees her as invaluable and secondly, J is a wheelchair user and is apparently very quick to throw the discrimination card around as soon as something doesn't go her way. Another key point to this tale is that I use a stoma bag and have done since I was a baby."

They go on to describe their first interaction with J when they used the disabled bathroom to empty their stoma bag.

They wrote: "I started hearing a loud banging on the door. I said one moment and opened the door to a lady in a wheelchair, the infamous J. I was berated for about five minutes things such as 'why is a healthy young man using a disabled bathroom I should be ashamed, etc' drawing the attention of everyone in the nearby vicinity before she even let me speak. I eventually got a word in, reminded her that not all disabilities are blatantly obvious and lifted my shirt up to show her my bag. She went bright red and I got on with my day."

The next day, the user reported that there was a sign on the bathroom saying "wheelchair users only." After commenting to another member of staff, "have you seen J's latest stunt," they then received an email from HR and a verbal warning.

The Reddit user then describes how they lost their cool with J and told her "that the only reason she is still in a job is because of how long she had been with the business and that she isn't going to bully me out of my position like she had my two predecessors."

J was then suspended, according to the user, for "gross misconduct" and their verbal warning was "expunged."

"Whilst nobody is openly celebrating J's departure as would be a bit classless there certainly seems to be a better atmosphere around the office so I guess that's a positive," the user said.

Employee throwing paper in air
Frustrated employee. Stock image. According to our expert, this employees behavior is classed as a violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act which bans employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex (including pregnancy), and religion when it comes to: recruiting, hiring, promoting or demoting. golfcphoto/Getty Images

Newsweek spoke to Jared Pope, a HR law specialist and founder of Work Shield, about the controversial post, he said: "Situations like these, including any Title VII incident (a section of the Civil Rights Act which bans employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex including pregnancy, and religion) that occurs in the workplace, can be sticky-drama situations that have to be handled with care, expertise and, most importantly, ensuring everyone has a voice to be truly heard.

"Without understanding the proverbial 'other side of the coin,' one thing can be stated clearly: incidents related to discrimination and harassment, as well as any workplace misconduct, is best handled by a third-party to ensure the removal of any bias, whether conscious or not, as well as maintaining an objective and concrete framework in which these investigations are handled. To handle otherwise allows for processes to be overlooked, skipped, side tracked or disregarded which in turn allows voices to not be truly heard and decisions to be made on limited understanding."

On Reddit, other users supported the original poster.

User melkesjokolade89 said: "Ambulatory wheelchair user here and 100 percent agree. I also have invisible disabilities and had to use the accessible toilet before I got my wheelchair. Never assume all disability is visible, most isn't."

User Blurgas wrote: "You'd think someone who works at a law firm, disabled or not, would know better than to screw with ADA compliance."

User IntoTheSinBinForYou commented: "NTA Not all heroes wear capes. My disabilities are not external and someone like J would never be able to understand."

Newsweek has reached out to user niffedofficeworker for comment.

Mom says she deserves Christmas off more than colleague without kids - New York Post

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

Tis the season for entitlement.

A mom is causing a stir by asking her childless colleague to withdraw her time-off request for Christmas — believing that having a child makes her more qualified for the vacation day. The request struck a chord with the internet.

“Ok I feel terrible about this,” the mom writes in a thread on UK-based parenting site Mumsnet, attempting to justify her selfish ask, prefacing that she and the colleague get along well, but since they both requested the day off, her manager is leaving it to them to sort out who is off the clock.

“I have asked her to withdraw her request as she and her husband who have no kids normally go to her husband’s parents on Christmas Day, but they also go every week so it’s not like they never see them,” the woman writes, attempting to give grounds for why she believes her colleague should work and she should not.

Employee working
“I do feel bad asking her to do this but if she won’t then I’m going to have no choice but to leave my job,” the woman writes.

“I, on the other hand, have a four-year-old Autistic [sic] son,” the woman writes, continuing to air out details of her personal life to an audience of strangers, noting that her son’s nursery school will be closed.

Then, she continues to speculate about her colleague’s personal life, estimating that since their work shift starts between 7 and 10 in the morning “she and her husband could still be at his parents for lunchtime whereas because I am a single mama and the nurseries are closed I have no one to watch my son.”

Cue the world’s tiniest violin.

“Yes, I could pay someone but it would be extremely expensive,” the woman writes, excusing a solution to her problem.

“I do feel bad asking her to do this but if she won’t then I’m going to have no choice but to leave my job,” she continues.

Few could sympathize with the out-of-touch mom with some calling her request “unreasonable.”

“Oh yeah I forgot! If you don’t have children then Christmas and family means absolutely nothing to you!” one commenter snarked.

Another had a more practical approach.

“Whoever asked first should get it. You having a child doesn’t make you more entitled to the day off,” they said.

Others were more middle-ground.

“I think it is okay to ask because you are in a very difficult situation, however it is not ok to minimize her Christmas just because she has no child,” another commenter politely pointed out.

Another summed up a frank reminder that entitlement around the holidays –and in general – will get you on the naughty list.

“I don’t believe having kids should entitle you to preferential time off at Christmas. It’s an important time for many people. If you get on well with her you could ask given the other difficulties you would have, but if you’ve previously had xmases off and she hasn’t, then it’s probably her turn.”
