Work is about done on Lonza Greenwood’s four-year, $100 million expansion, and Travis Dover, vice president of global operations and president of Lonza Greenwood, says the expansion is about far more than the buzz it’s creating or the 60 new jobs that come with it.
Dover, who’s been with Lonza since 1998, says it’s about a long-term relationship between the community, the company and its people.
“We’ve been in Greenwood for 55 years,” he says. “We invest in Greenwood because there’s already a wealth of knowledge here. We care about job growth; we care about the people of South Carolina.”
Make no mistake — Lonza, with more than 30 locations worldwide including 16 in North America — is a powerhouse. The Switzerland-based company, named for the River Lonza that helped power the 125-year-old operation in its early years, is the world’s largest maker of the sort of hard capsules used to deliver medications and supplements to the human body.
Hard capsules are such a part of everyday life it’s easy to take them for granted.
But if you’ve taken any number of prescribed or over-the-counter medications or health supplements offered by U.S.-based brands, chances are good those capsules came from Lonza Greenwood, the company’s top-producing facility.
“Imagine all the products available at a pharmacy, or that are prescribed by your doctor — we’re partnering across many of the major brands of the U.S.,” Dover says.
The expansion, which adds another 50,000 square feet of manufacturing space across the site and is resulting in 100% automation in certain areas, means production capacity will as much as double in some operations.
The expansion is also bringing patented technologies to bear that will more effectively deliver ingredients to targeted parts of the human body in new, innovative ways, according to a company release.
Meanwhile, Lonza continues investing in its people, Dover says, through a tuition-reimbursement program, a veterans-employment initiative and a variety of apprenticeships and internships made available via partnerships with technical colleges in South Carolina.
The company’s campus includes an onsite gym free to employees, and an agreement with the Humane Society ensures the availability of animal-assisted therapy services of which employees can take advantage.
“We care deeply about our people and want to ensure they’re nurtured, respected and have every reason to build a long-term career here,” Dover says.
Once the last major phase of the expansion wraps up in December, the 200-acre campus at 535 Emerald Road will be home to about 700 jobs — including 50 for which the company is now accepting applications, Dover says.
So how does a global company like Lonza do so well in Greenwood, South Carolina?
Dover says it’s rooted in the ethos of a community steeped in the great textile operations of the past.
“Greenwood’s workforce has a manufacturing DNA built into it,” he says.
Not to mention, the Upstate location offers a great quality of life.
“Greenwood offers a great quality of life that our people enjoy,” he says. “People love to live here.”
