Dragons Complete Day One at ITA Regionals - Drexel Dragons

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com
PRINCETON, N.J. - The Drexel women's team completed the opening day at the ITA Regionals in Princeton. Drexel had one individual and two doubles team advance to Saturday. Lorie Lemongo will play in the third round of singles competition tomorrow. The doubles teams of Lemongo and Mya Fuentes as well as Cristina Corte Gonzalez and Renata Lombera advanced to the second round.

In singles play, Lemongo earned a bye before playing in the second round. She cruised to a straight-set victory against Avery Hopkey of Lehigh, losing just one game in the opening set. Lemongo is looking to duplicate her success at last year's event, where she advanced to the Super Regional.

On the doubles side, Lemongo and Fuentes advanced with an 8-4 victory over their opponents, Jimena Garbino and Deniz Soyer from Hofstra. They will play tomorrow against an opponent to be announced. Corte Gonzalez and Lombera didn't get a chance to play, but they did advance by default.

Winners on Saturday will advance to the final day of the tournament on Sunday. The ITA Super Regionals will begin on Friday in New Haven, Conn.

Advisor shot by now-dead colleague is suing the shooter's son - Citywire USA

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

The Morgan Stanely advisor who was shot at his Oklahoma City office by a fellow advisor is now suing the son of that now-deceased ex-colleague.

Christopher Bayouth, 61, was hospitalized due to injuries from the June 30 shooting. He filed a civil lawsuit against his ex-colleague, Leonard Bernstein, and Bernstein’s widow, Sheryl Bernstein, in the days following the incident.

Bernstein, who was 90, died on July 28. His eldest son, David Bernstein, petitioned to become executor of his will; a judge granted David Bernstein’s request earlier this month.

Through his attorney, Bayouth successfully filed to substitute David Bernstein as a defendant in place of his late father, court records now show.

Sheryl Bernstein had been in line to become executor of the will before David Bernstein took over the role. She requested that the court halt proceedings in the civil suit after David Bernstein became executor, but that request was denied.

Before the change occurred, an attorney for Bayouth told Citywire he believed the Bernstein family was attempting to change executors in order to protect assets from a civil suit.

Leonard Bernstein

The June shooting occurred at Morgan Stanley’s 6305 Waterford Blvd. branch (pictured), in the northern reaches of Oklahoma City.

Leonard Bernstein, who was terminated by Morgan Stanley the following day, faced the criminal charge of assault and battery with a deadly weapon; the charge was dropped after his death. The picture above is a mugshot taken after his arrest.

A July petition in Bayouth’s civil lawsuit claims that Leonard Bernstein’s widow acted negligently as his primary caregiver. Specifically, it claims that she failed to restrict his driving and his access to firearms, also noting she had ‘a duty to ensure that Mr. Bernstein was properly taking his medications.’

The legal petition echoed concerns raised by former colleagues of Bernstein’s that the elderly advisor struggled with mental health challenges near the end of his life. According to the petition, Bayouth, 61, had incurred at least $200k in medical expenses as a result of his injuries. He was treated for his wounds in a local hospital but has since been released

A 34-year industry veteran, Bayouth first registered with Morgan Stanley as a broker in 1997 and is currently a dually registered advisor and broker-dealer with the company.

David Bernstein, for his part, is an attorney based in Norman, Okla., who has run his own practice. An online biography states that Bernstein has over 30 years of experience in personal injury and insurance cases.

Neither David Bernstein nor his attorney in the case have returned requests for comment.

Alcoa’s Springbrook Farm to become city center when complete - WVLT

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

ALCOA, Tenn. (WVLT) - It’s a project that’s been in the works for 20 years, Alcoa leaders have made progress to give the city its first city center just off Alcoa Highway.

The former Aluminum Company of America West Plant is getting a face lift.

“Alcoa starting out as a company town, is a much different approach to their development,” Alcoa’s Deputy City Manager, Bruce Applegate, said.

Applegate explained they were spread out initially.

“But what we missed out on was that central location for people to come together to really experience some of the community and to build local relationships,” Applegate said.

He and other city leaders wanted to change that. The city acquired up to 400 acres, demolished the facility to put that and all the land back into use.

“We are transforming one of their most historic sites within the community and making it into a new feature that’s going to be a historic site for our future citizens who are in the area,” Applegate said.

New houses and apartments, shops and restaurants, a greenway and park, and more will come to Springbrook Farm.

“We’re really stressing that we get this right,” Applegate said. “While government is not known to move very quickly, we are working as fast as possible to make sure that those groups that come to us with viable shovel ready projects are able to get started as quickly as possible.”

A Food City is set to open in the next six months, and the first building to the apartments will likely be in June of 2023.

The goal is to make Alcoa a destination on the map.

All the projects are set to be complete within the next five to 10 years. The city has spent about $10 million so far.

Russell: Mercedes will have "more complete car" in F1 2023 - Motorsport.com

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

Listen to this article

Mercedes has struggled all season with the W13, notably with porpoising and ride issues, and the car has only really shone at high-downforce venues.

Russell says that the team has chosen a specific philosophy for the W14, and has clear targets that it will try to meet.

"I'm confident that the direction we need to take is the correct one," he said. "We have a philosophy that we're going to be trying to adopt in our development, and I'm very confident that is the correct one.

"But equally, it doesn't mean that we can necessarily achieve it. We have a target, and that is a massive positive in itself. As I said, we have a clear target we're trying to chase.

"Now, can we achieve that? I have every confidence that we can. We obviously don't know how much the other rivals are going to improve over this winter.

"But I definitely have confidence that we will have a more complete car across the circuit ranges into 2023."

Russell insisted that his confidence is inspired by the numbers that Mercedes is working with.

Intriguingly he also noted that the team really got an understanding on the W13's issues over the run of races from Spa to Zandvoort to Monza.

"It's data-driven, to be honest. We've done a lot of analysis on the races we've been competitive, the races we've been slow, and trying to understand why that was.

George Russell, Mercedes W13

"And I think we've managed to get quite a grasp onto that, and understand why at certain circuits we were so much more competitive than others. We've only managed to learn that over the course of these races.

"And I think that triple-header after the summer break was quite telling for us, with our performance swings between the low downforce and the high downforce circuits.

Asked by Motorsport.com to expand on the philosophy that Mercedes is pursuing, he said: "I don't want to go into too much detail, because it's something that we worked very hard on to understand, and hopefully will give us an advantage into next year.

"So I don't want to say anything that will potentially benefit our rivals.

"But at the end of the day, every single car is different. I have to say, I've mentioned a couple of times this year that I feel like we've understood our car, and we're on the right track, but we have been set back with a couple of oddities that we weren't expecting.

"But I think we've had enough races now that we've gone through so many different scenarios that I can't really imagine there's going to be another one that catches us by surprise.

"We've had the porpoising issues, we've had the ride issues, we've had the car touching the ground and damaging the floor issue.

"We've had so many different issues, and we believe now that we've got a direction that we need to head in. Hopefully, the laptime can come with it."

Peninsula Official Alleges Colleague Assaulted Her At City Hall - Patch

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

DALY CITY, CA — A Peninsula official alleges she was assaulted earlier this week by a City Council colleague.

Juslyn Manolo accused fellow Daly City councilmember Pamela DiGiovanni on Monday before City Council meeting later in the day in which she made the explosive allegations public.

Manolo alleges DiGiovanni slammed a door on her back as she was leaving a room, NBC Bay Area reports. Photos show a large bruise on her upper back.

“I am distraught because councilmember assaulted me in City Hall,” Manolo said during Monday night’s meeting.

Manolo requested that several agenda items be continued because she was “still very much traumatized by the incident.”

Manolo has filed a police report in connection with the incident, the television station reports.

DiGiovanni said she is “vehemently denying the allegations” that she said were “politically motivated.”

“It did not happen,” DiGiovanni said.

Manolo left the meeting early after her request to continue the agenda items was granted.

“I don’t think she’s in any condition to debate and discuss the items that are before the council, given what I have heard and what has happened,” Vice Mayor Raymond A. Buenaventura said.

Manolo said the assault occurred after she walked into the room and DiGiovanni told her she was in a meeting, NBC Bay Area reports.

“It was very painful, and I was in complete shock that she would do something like that to me in a physical manner,” Manalo told the television station.

DiGiovanni in her denial of the allegations said that she herself has been the victim of bullying.

“I would never do such a thing to anyone,” DiGiovanni said.

“As much as I’ve been bullied, over these past few months, have had public comments made about me.”

Hidden yardage makes Michigan one of the most complete teams in football - MLive.com

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

ANN ARBOR -- A punt block. A perfect 26 for 26 on extra points. A punt return for a touchdown. A fumble recovery on a kickoff.

Michigan’s offense has scored the most points in the country. The defense hasn’t missed a beat despite losing last season’s stars. But it’s the special teams play that has made Michigan one of the most complete teams in college football.

And it’s the phase of the game that will get extra attention in Saturday’s game at Iowa, another team with solid special teams.

Through their 4-0 start, the Wolverines boast the second-best special teams in the country, per the Fremeau Efficiency Index (FEI), and it’s been a theme the past few years. Michigan hasn’t missed an extra point this season, and kicker Jake Moody hasn’t missed in 111 career attempts. Punter Brad Robbins regularly pins opponents deep. It helps that Moody is in his fifth year at Michigan, Robbins his sixth, and long snapper William Wagner is a senior.

In some cases, good special teams play is like a good referee: It’s best if it goes unnoticed. Michigan’s had 36 kickoffs this season, and none have resulted in the opponent starting past its own 25-yard line. Michigan’s coverage and return units steal the “hidden yardage” that helps with field position, like causing fair catches on deep punts and blocking well on returns, things that don’t show up in the box score.

But the Wolverines have also made some highlight plays this season.

In the first half against Connecticut, the Wolverines blocked one punt and returned another for a touchdown. On Saturday, Michigan’s opening kickoff bounced off the Maryland returner’s face mask, and Michigan recovered, scoring one play later.

See also: Iowa coach compares Michigan matchup to an NFL playoff game

The recipe for Michigan’s special teams success, head coach Jim Harbaugh said this week, is players who take great pride in their roles. He credited Jay Harbaugh, who’s in his third season as special teams coordinator, and other staffers. (Michigan has two analysts on staff devoted to special teams, including one who served as a special teams coordinator in the NFL for several years.)

“A lot of time, a lot of man hours, and a great pride taken by the players,” Harbaugh said. “It’s been really good, going back years now.”

Harbaugh noted that several Wolverines have landed on NFL rosters because of their work on special teams, whether punt or kickoff return or coverage units. Josh Ross (Ravens) and Ambry Thomas (49ers) have both seen the field exclusively on special teams this season. Zach Gentry, Josh Metellus, Josh Uche, and Sean McKeon are other ex-Wolverines contributing mostly on special teams.

There’s a standard at Michigan, and Jay Harbaugh said on Wednesday that the players naturally take pride in whatever they’re doing -- offense, defense, special teams, weight room work, academics. “Our players have a high internal drive to be great, so it makes it really easy to put them in new roles and have them embrace them.”

Michigan finished first last season in FEI’s special rankings; Iowa was second. The Hawkeyes are 13th this year.

“You line up against them, you feel like you’re playing against yourself in the sense that they all care, they all try, they all run really fast, they’re fundamentally sound,” Jay Harbaugh said of Iowa’s special teams. He singled out the punter for his strong leg and athleticism.

Iowa’s offense has struggled mightily this year, but the team is 3-1 because of defense and special teams. The Hawkeyes won’t beat Michigan with an offensive barrage. They can do it by controlling field position and coming up with a big play or two on special teams. It’s a blueprint that’s worked for them in many big games over the years. Michigan is well equipped to avoid such a fate.

With staged referendums in Ukraine complete, Russia begins the annexation process - WJCT NEWS

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

MOSCOW — Moscow-backed separatist leaders in occupied areas of Ukraine moved quickly to issue formal appeals to join the Russian Federation on Wednesday — just hours after claiming overwhelming numbers of people there had chosen to join Russia in a series of highly controversial referendums.

The vote was widely condemned by Ukraine and its Western partners as a violation of international law — with ballots cast at gunpoint.

In Donetsk, the pro-Russian separatist leader Denis Pushilin praised a "colossal result" that purportedly saw 99.23% of votes in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic back an initiative to join Russia.

"To say we didn't expect such a result simply wouldn't be true," said Pushilin in a press conference in which he shrugged off Western criticism. "We've made history," he added.

Pro-Russian officials in the occupied territories of Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia announced similar returns — claiming between 87% to 98% of residents had voted in favor of joining Russia.

The Kremlin now seems all but guaranteed to attempt a repeat of its annexation of the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine following a similar referendum in 2014. The move was never internationally recognized and triggered Western sanctions.

"Welcome home to Russia!" proclaimed former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now a member of Russia's Security Council, in a post on social media.

Yet the exact Russian timetable for absorbing the new regions remained unclear.

There were reports Wednesday that separatist leaders were en route to Moscow for consultations.

President Vladimir Putin is expected to address the Federal Council — Russia's upper house of parliament — in a speech Friday.

Meanwhile, several senior Russian lawmakers insisted that formal legislative sessions to take up annexation could wait until next week — which could suggest that Moscow might be eager to shore up its military defenses in Ukraine first.

The vote unfolded as Russia moved to mobilize an additional 300,000 troops to stem a Ukrainian counteroffensive that has seized back vast swaths of territory in the country's east.

Western officials have pointed to that timing as evidence of Kremlin desperation to solidify Russian gains before they evaporated completely.

Meanwhile, Russian officials have insisted the newly incorporated lands would be entitled to full protection under Russian military doctrine — even threatening the use of Russia's nuclear arsenal in an effort to force Kyiv and the West to accept the new boundaries.

Base Realignment and Closure: DOD Should Provide Congress More Complete and Transparent Information - Government Accountability Office

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

GAO-22-105207 Published: Sep 28, 2022. Publicly Released: Sep 28, 2022.

Fast Facts

The Department of Defense has closed bases through a process called Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC), most recently in 2005-2011. DOD must clean up hazards that pose risks to people and the environment and restore these sites for future use.

We found that DOD didn't report complete information to Congress on ongoing environmental activities and costs related to BRAC from 1998-2011. For example, DOD didn't report an estimate of when remaining BRAC sites would be closed or how many sites needed continued funding for long-term monitoring of contaminants.

We recommended that DOD address this issue and more in future reports to Congress.

What GAO Found

Department of Defense (DOD) expenditures for Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC)-related activities exceeded initial estimates through fiscal year 2020. This was driven in part by environmental restoration costs, which could not be fully captured in initial estimates. According to DOD data, the department has spent in total about $64.5 billion—an increase of $22.8 billion from DOD's initial budget estimate—in funding for BRAC-related activities, as of September 2020. Of this total, DOD spent $14.8 billion on environmental activities and caretaking of BRAC sites and estimated it will need an additional $7 billion. DOD data show it has closed 7,334 (83 percent) of the total BRAC sites. GAO has previously reported that it can be difficult to accurately predict total costs for environmental restoration without completing investigations into levels of contamination in accordance with land reuse plans. Costs may also change due to new laws and increased contaminant levels after follow-on testing.

Base Realignment and Closure Sites Restoration Status as of September 2020

highlights_5_v1_105207

aWhen a site had more than one phase planned or ongoing, we included it in the count for the earliest phase.

DOD reports some future BRAC costs but does not provide complete and transparent information to Congress regarding an end date for all BRAC rounds or details on long-term management costs. DOD's 2019 BRAC report identifies what it calls end dates for each BRAC round; however, these dates are based on when DOD will complete proposed cleanup actions, not on when sites are closed out and no additional funds will be needed. GAO's analysis of DOD data shows that 889 of the remaining 1,486 BRAC sites are in or planned to undergo long-term management in perpetuity (i.e., with no definite end date), as of September 2020. DOD also has internally estimated long-term management costs of $1 billion for these sites. However, DOD did not include the number of such sites or related costs in its 2019 report. By reporting to Congress on when sites will reach site closeout and on the number and associated costs of sites that will require long-term management in perpetuity, DOD would provide Congress greater clarity on BRAC costs.

DOD's estimated annual recurring savings are outdated. The 2019 BRAC report identifies $12 billion in annual savings from the five BRAC rounds, an estimate DOD has previously reported. The report states that the savings amount is an estimate of costs avoided after implementing each round. However, when adjusted for inflation, costs have varied since the initial estimate, potentially offsetting the estimated amount of costs avoided. DOD officials stated they could not justify the resources required to attempt to recalculate the annual recurring savings from BRAC rounds. While investing resources in recalculating potential savings may not be worthwhile, reporting information on the caveats and limitations of the savings estimate would provide Congress greater clarity and insight on the precision and currency of the estimate.

Why GAO Did This Study

Since 1988, the department has spent billions of dollars to implement BRAC rounds to reduce excess infrastructure and meet changing force structure needs. DOD initiated five BRAC rounds from 1988 through 2005. DOD is legally obligated to restore its properties, including BRAC sites, to a level that protects human health and the environment.

Senate Report 116-48 directed DOD to prepare a report by November 2019 to provide information on the costs and savings for each BRAC round. It also includes a provision for GAO to review DOD's 2019 report and other previous reports related to BRAC. In this report, GAO (1) analyzes how BRAC spending compared to initial estimates, (2) evaluates the extent DOD reported complete and transparent estimates for BRAC future costs and end dates, and (3) evaluates the extent DOD's 2019 BRAC report presented valid findings for realized savings.

GAO examined the information reported to Congress on costs and savings of BRAC, analyzed information from a database on environmental restoration efforts and from a non-generalizable sample of nine bases, and interviewed DOD officials.

Recommendations

GAO is making two recommendations. When reporting to Congress on BRAC, DOD should (1) identify when sites will reach site closeout and the number and costs of sites estimated to remain in long-term management, and (2) explicitly state the caveats and limitations of its savings estimates. DOD concurred with GAO's two recommendations.

Recommendations for Executive Action

Agency Affected Recommendation Status
Department of Defense The Secretary of Defense should ensure that the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Energy, Installations, and Environment, when reporting to Congress on the status of BRAC rounds, clearly identifies when sites are estimated to reach the site closeout milestone, the number of sites that are estimated to remain in long-term management, and the estimated costs associated with long-term management of these sites. (Recommendation 1)

Open

When we confirm what actions the agency has taken in response to this recommendation, we will provide updated information.

Department of Defense The Secretary of Defense should ensure that the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Energy, Installations, and Environment, when reporting to Congress on BRAC savings, explicitly states caveats and limitations of DOD's savings estimates, such as by documenting that the assumptions used in developing the initial estimates have not changed and that no additional work has been done to adjust estimates based on changing cost data. Yankees clinch 2022 American League East title - MLB.com

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

TORONTO -- With his dripping ballcap turned backward, beamed and popped the cork of another bubbly bottle in Rogers Centre’s visiting clubhouse, dousing his teammates with reckless abandon. The Yankees' star appeared as though he’d gone for a fully clothed swim, sporting a soaked T-shirt that declared in bold white letters: “The East is Ours.”

Indeed it is. When the Yankees first gathered as a complete squad six months ago, savoring a sunny spring afternoon that ended a winter of uncertainty, manager Aaron Boone had outlined the expectations ahead. The first objective was to secure the American League East title; with a 5-2 win over the Blue Jays on Tuesday night, they have done so.

“I’ll be a little bit happier maybe at the end of October,” Judge said. “But this is a big moment, especially for a lot of guys in that room that haven’t had a chance to clinch a division. To get a chance to celebrate with them is going to be fun tonight.”

A week that has seen the national spotlight focused on the exploits of one individual player -- Judge and his ongoing pursuit of Roger Maris’ single-season AL home run record -- shifted into a celebration of team performance, with the Yankees toasting their first AL East title since 2019. To be sure, Judge voiced no complaints about yielding that attention.

While Judge was kept in the ballpark for a seventh consecutive game, tying his career high with four walks along the way, the Yankees offered a potent reminder of why they are in this position.  drove in three runs and  pitched effectively into the eighth inning, precisely the type of cohesive formula they may need to enjoy postseason success.

“We can say we’re the best team in the best division this year, and it wasn’t easy,” Boone said. “Everyone in that room knows that. We took everyone’s punches; we had some low moments. But tonight is to be celebrated. It’s not easy going through the American League East and to survive. … This is step one, and we want to win a championship. That’s our goal.”

New York’s 95th victory secured a first-round bye and home-field advantage in the AL Division Series, with the Yankees’ upcoming opponent still to be determined. They clinched the 58th playoff appearance in franchise history and their sixth consecutive playoff berth (since 2017) on Thursday, as well as their 24th trip to the postseason in the last 28 years (since 1995).

“With the new format, it’s definitely nice to get a bye, and we get to play in front of our fans, which is going to be great,” Taillon said.

and Torres stroked back-to-back RBI singles in the second, and Torres added run-scoring hits in the fifth and sixth. banged a run-scoring double in the sixth to support Taillon, who settled in after surrendering a leadoff homer to George Springer.

“We’re in one of the best divisions in baseball, and to be able to lock it up is a big deal,” Taillon said. “We’re the Yankees. Everyone brings their best against us, every single time. And here we are.”

Judge extended his on-base streak to 26 games, the longest by a Yankee this year, with those four walks. His only official at-bat came in the first inning, a hard lineout to third base.

“I’ll trade four walks for a win every single day,” said Judge, who scored twice.

Having not homered since his 60th blast on Sept. 20 against the Pirates, Judge’s seven games without a long ball equal his second-longest drought of the season. Judge had nine straight games without a homer from Aug. 13-21 and seven without one from April 14-21.

That was of no concern to the Yankees, who splashed the night away with a loud and lively party, packed shoulder to shoulder in a dressing area that bears more than a passing resemblance to a Manhattan railway apartment.

Plastic sheeting covered each locker and hip-hop music blared as players donned goggles and double-fisted cans of Budweiser, providing icy-cold baths for anyone and everyone within the general vicinity. Torres strutted about the room wearing a fireman’s helmet, and rookie Oswaldo Cabrera declared: “I’m living the dream!”

“We all erupted,” said catcher Kyle Higashioka. “It’s what you want after a big win and clinching the division.”

That served as an acknowledgment of the hard work put in through a spring slate and 154 regular-season games, but also a dangling carrot of sorts -- Tuesday’s party was one the Yankees hope to replicate three more times, celebrating each advance toward a 28th World Series title.

“I don’t like talking about the future, but I like this team. It’s a special group,” Judge said. “We went out there, playing in the toughest division in baseball, and went out there to win our division. I like our chances, that’s for sure.”

Aztecs Complete Road Sweep at Fresno State - SDSU Athletics

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com
FRESNO, Calif. – The San Diego State volleyball team posted its first road sweep over Fresno State since 1996 with a 3-0 whitewash (25-18, 25-21, 25-21) of the Bulldogs in a Mountain West match Tuesday night at Save Mart Center.

The Aztecs (4-10, 2-1 MW) received 12 kills from Mikela Labno, while McKenna Douglas served up a career-high five aces to help the Scarlet and Black win its second straight and hand Fresno State (6-9, 0-3 MW) its third consecutive defeat.

Collectively, SDSU recorded its highest hitting percentage of the 2022 campaign (.349), maintaining a 42-38 advantage in kills to go with a season-best 10 service aces to help spark its victory.

In addition to Labno's production, the Aztecs received nine kills and two block assists from Kayla Rivera, while Julia Haynie hit .636 for the evening after launching seven non-returnables of her own in 11 attempts without an error.

Elly Schraeder also displayed a .444 efficiency, flooring six shots in nine swings with just two miscues, while Douglas and Ellie Geoghegan finished with five digs apiece, as SDSU owned a 27-22 in that statistical category.

The Aztecs posted their best hitting percentage of the match in the opening set, notching a .379 clip on 17 kills in 29 swings with just six errors. SDSU flashed its balance offensively, with Rivera blasting four kills in the frame, while Labno, Haynie and Schraeder provided three apiece.

Still, the teams battled through nine ties and four lead changes in the early going before the Scarlet and Black tallied four straight points to break a 12-12 deadlock and vault in front for good. Rivera launched two kills sandwiched around a Madison Corf put-away, while Douglas capped the run with an ace.

The Bulldogs never crept closer than three points the rest of the way after an Addison Haluska kill narrowed the gap to 19-16. However, the Aztecs kept the host school at bay, as Schraeder powered down a kill and combined with Labno on a block, while Labno and Rivera ultimately provided the clinching points with back-to-back put-aways.

The second set was another closely contested affair as the two sides witnessed six ties and a pair of lead changes. With the score tied at 13-13, however, SDSU fashioned another timely 6-0 blitz to seize control. Douglas twirled two aces during that stretch and Rivera launched a kill, while the Aztecs benefited from a trio of attack errors.

Moments later, Fresno State responded with an 8-3 surge to trim the margin to one at 22-21. Ella Rud bookended the run with kill and a service ace, but the host school could not gain the upper hand. However, SDSU withstood the challenge thanks to a pair of late put-aways by Labno sandwiched around another non-returnable in the middle by Schraeder.

Despite posting just 12 kills in the third set, the Aztecs never trailed in that final frame, benefiting from seven Bulldog attack errors while serving up four aces. Clinging to a slim 13-12 lead, SDSU crafted a key 7-2 run to give itself some much-needed breathing room at 20-14. Haynie provided the offensive spark with a pair of kills, while Douglas and Sarena Gonzalez each contributed an ace in that span.

Fresno State threw one last scare into the visitors thanks to the exploits of Rud, who blasted three kills during a 7-3 outburst that narrowed the gap to 23-21. However, a Labno kill and a Bulldog attack error gave the Aztecs their final two points to ice the victory.

Rud led all players with 16 kills, while Kasey Purry finished with four block assists in the defeat.

San Diego State returns to action this weekend for its first match outside the Golden State this season when it ventures to Las Vegas to battle UNLV at Cox Pavilion. First serve is set for 1 p.m. PT.

'It's worrisome': Hurricane Ian has Florida residents rushing to complete last-minute preparations - Fox Weather

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

As Hurricane Ian continues to undergo rapid intensification in the Caribbean Sea, thousands of Florida residents spent the weekend preparing for possible power outages and flooding due to the hurricane's effects.

Ian strengthened into a hurricane early Monday morning, and the FOX Forecast Center expected Hurricane Ian to rapidly intensify into a major hurricane by Monday night as it approaches western Cuba.

A Hurricane Watch has been issued along Florida's Gulf Coast ahead of the expected wind, rain and storm surge from Hurricane Ian later this week.

Rapid intensification occurs when a tropical cyclone's (tropical depression, tropical storm or hurricane) maximum sustained winds increase by at least 35 mph in a 24-hour period, according to the National Hurricane Center.

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER ON TV

"If it doesn't come, it doesn't come, but it's better to be prepared," Tampa, Florida, resident Jamie Cruz said.

Cruz, like many other Floridians, spent the weekend in line for sandbags.

"I knew it was going to be bad, but I didn't know it would be that bad," he said about the line of people waiting for sandbags. "I waited in line for three hours."

Cars lined the streets around areas where sandbags were being distributed with the hopes that they could help save their homes from possible flooding from Hurricane Ian.

"Most of Tampa Bay is in low elevation," said St. Pete Beach resident David Beshears. "So, whether you're directly on the water or close to the water, it's worrisome."

The Beshears purchased their dream home on St. Pete Beach a year ago, and they're still renovating.

"The anxiety is definitely there," Michelle Beshears said. "For sure."

WHAT TO PUT IN AN EMERGENCY KIT

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in his state over the weekend and encouraged Floridians not to wait to make hurricane preparations.

"I know we've got a lot of people that have moved into the state of Florida," DeSantis said at a news conference on Sunday. "Just make sure you make your preparations."

He also warned residents that power outages and fuel disruptions were likely due to Hurricane Ian.

"That's something that could happen with a hurricane of this magnitude," he said. "And also anticipate that in certain areas of the state, if you are in a very vulnerable area, there may even be evacuations that are issued."

NEW TO FLORIDA? HERE'S A GUIDE TO HELP YOU PREPARE FOR YOUR FIRST HURRICANE SEASON

Key West, Florida, hasn't taken a direct hit from a hurricane since 1846, but it could be one of the first locations in the United States to feel the effects of Hurricane Ian.

Key West Mayor Teri Johnston joined FOX Weather on Sunday and said the city has been preparing for Hurricane Ian since Friday.

"Make sure you've got food, water, make sure you've got a good supply of medications, and make sure you have taken into consideration your pets," she said. "The people of Key West are pretty well versed in hurricane preparation. So we are sending out these preparations mostly for the newer people that have come to Key West."

The city of Tampa has also been busy preparing for the possible effects of Hurricane Ian.

"We practice and exercise on a regular basis, ensuring that we are prepared before a storm hits and that we are prepared to serve our community in the event that a storm does hit," Tampa Mayor Jane Castor said.

Castor was also asking members of the community to prepare as well.

"That means getting prepared," she said. "Ensuring that you've taken care of your home. Ensuring that you're paying attention to your neighbors. Getting those preparedness kits together."

HOW TO PREPARE FOR AN EVACUATION

Weather conditions are expected to change rapidly once Hurricane Ian nears Florida.

The hurricane has the potential for a dangerous and potentially deadly storm surge, torrential rain, flash flooding, strong wind and tornadoes.

Given Florida's unique coastline, the topography lends itself to the state being highly susceptible to storm-surge flooding during hurricanes.

Storm surge is the rise of water levels caused directly by a storm and does not take into account rainfall or wave size, which can add additional feet on top of a storm's surge.

Emergency officials say now is the time to prepare, and residents are urged to know their evacuation zones in case any evacuation orders are given for residents living along the coast or in low-lying areas.
