FLINT, MI -- A Flint Board of Education member has been charged with assault and battery and disorderly conduct after allegedly attacking a fellow board member at a meeting in March.
Danielle Green, who was Board President at the time of the incident, was charged by the Flint City Attorney’s office on Monday, April 4, according to District Court records.
Green is accused of attacking fellow board member Laura MacIntyre, who has since filed a personal protection order against Green.
MacIntyre said she was treated for concussion symptoms after the incident.
The alleged attack took place at a finance committee meeting on the morning of March 23 in the district’s administration building. MacIntyre alleges that Green stood up and approached her before physically assaulting her.
Flint school board members held an emergency meeting later that day to strip Green of her board presidency and elect new board officers.
However, since she is an elected official, she could not be fully removed from the board.
If convicted of a felony, Green automatically loses her seat on the Board of Education, Board Counsel Charis Lee said at the emergency meeting. Since she was charged by the city, both are misdemeanor charges.
During the emergency meeting, board members unanimously voted to bring police or security to every future board meeting.
MacIntyre said she immediately filed a police report after the incident. She was later treated for concussion-like symptoms.
“This board and this school district -- we have so much work to do,” MacIntyre said. “So much important work to do. We are constantly being railroaded and distracted and torn away from the real important work that needs to be done.
“I feel sad because at the end of the day, this is our district.”
The district has yet to approve a new strategic plan and will be forced to close more schools due to lowering enrollment and utility costs. It is also operating in its second year under a 15-year enhanced deficit elimination plan.
The next Flint Community Schools Board of Education regular meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. April 13 at the Accelerated Learning Academy, located at 1602 S. Averill Ave.
