WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Hartford softball team returned to America East play this afternoon with game one of a three-game weekend set against UMBC. Caylee English was the star of the day for the Hawks, throwing a complete game shutout against the two-time reigning conference champion Retrievers. Hartford moves to 12-17 overall and 1-3 in conference play while UMBC drops to 17-6 and 2-2 against conference opponents.
HARTFORD 1, UMBC 0
Hartford's starter, English was locked in an intense pitcher's duel against UMBC ace, Courtney Coppersmith. After a scoreless top of the first, Haley Cassidy got the scoring started off with a bang in the bottom half, blasting a lead-off solo home run out to left field, marking the lone run scored in the contest. English pitched a gem of a game, allowing just two runners to advance in to scoring position all throughout while also sending back to the dugout 10 batters in a row from the middle of the fourth to the beginning of the seventh innings. Hartford walked away victorious in a nail-biter against UMBC by a final score of, 1-0.
