Red/White scrimmage highlights final day
Darius Perrantes hit Nick Leopold with a 29-yard strike, then found Leopold again with the 2-point conversion pass to give the Red squad an 18-17 lead over the White with 56 seconds left. The Red then survived a 45-yard field goal attempt that sailed right in the closing seconds to pull out a win.
"It was good to get back on the field this spring and get some quality work done," said head coach Jerry Schmitt, the winningest coach in school history, who will be entering his 18th season with the Dukes this fall. "We were able do get a lot of work done with a young team."
The Dukes were forced to cancel spring drills in 2000 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and played a five-game spring schedule in 2021.
The team participated in situational drills before conducting a four-quarter scrimmage with a running clock.
Duquesne, which closed last season with three consecutive wins to finish 7-3, became the first team from the NEC to defeat an FBS team when it knocked off Ohio, 28-26, in Athens in week two.
The Dukes, who are scheduled to play two games against FBS opponents for the fourth time in the past five years, will open the 2022 season with a "Week Zero" game on Aug. 27 at Florida State. It will be Duquesne's first-ever meeting against the Seminoles and first game against a current ACC member since a 53-20 loss to Clemson in 1950.
Duquesne, which has finished first or second in the conference eight times since joining the NEC prior to the 2008 season, has posted more overall wins (76) and conference victories (48) than any other NEC team since the beginning of the 2011 season.
