Marcus Bingham has been the MVP for Michigan State basketball so far this season. But I think it’s time to recognize he is the best big in the conference.
As the 2021-22 season continues, one player continues to shine brighter than most on this team. Marcus Bingham had a lot of hype around him heading into the season and he is living up to all of that and it’s time to start talking about if he is the best big in the Big Ten?
Now if you have watched any MSU games this year the main factor in Binghams game is his defense. He has established himself as one of the best shot-blockers in the conference and overall one of the best defenders. Even now, putting him into the defensive player of the year conversation is something he deserves.
Bingham’s offense also is really solid. Now when it comes to points per game his are not extremely high like a Hunter Dickinson or Kofi Cockburn because he does not play as many minutes as them due to having some lingering health issues due to having COVID-19 earlier this season. But also, because he is not the No. 1 offensive option for the Spartans. Hunter and Kofi are the offense for both of their teams.
So far this season, Bingham averages 10 points, seven rebounds, and is shooting 56 percent from the field. He also has started adding a three-point shot to his offensive arsenal and it adds a lot more options for the offense.
This season, Bingham has shown he can hang with the best of them. In their matchup against Michigan, one of the most looked at matchups was Bingham against Dickinson, and the former, I would say, won it. Hunter had 25 points to end the game but the majority came against Julius Marble and Joey Hauser rather than Bingham.
It’s also clear that when Bingham is on the floor it makes a major impact. The offense runs a lot smoother, the interior defense is drastically better and it’s hard to say that there is another big man in the conference that has a more complete all-around game than Bingham. It will be fun to watch how the rest of the regular season plays out for Marcus and I just hope he continues to be a solid player for this team and helps bring the team out of their current slump.
