Minnesota state Sen. Mary Kiffmeyer, R-Big Lake, announced Friday that she will not seek reelection this fall after she was paired with a GOP colleague in a newly drawn Senate district.
Instead, Kiffmeyer endorsed Sen. Andrew Mathews, R-Princeton, for the new Senate District 27.
Kiffmeyer is in her third Senate term, representing District 30, while Mathews is in his second, representing District 15. They were paired in a new district this week by the Supreme Court’s special redistricting panel. The district encompasses parts of Anoka, Mille Lacs, Isanti, and Sherburne counties north of the Twin Cities.
Kiffmeyer is a Capitol veteran, having served as secretary of state from 1999-2006. She then served in the House of Representatives from 2009-2011. She was elected to the Senate in 2012.
“I want to thank the people of my district for their support. I found immense joy in serving and working for them, in fact, it’s the people of the district I will miss the most,” she said in a statement announcing her retirement.
Mathews has served in the Senate since 2016 and is currently the chair of the Civil Law Committee.
Kiffmeyer joins a growing list of lawmakers who are retiring, sparked in part by the new district maps, a result of the decennial census and redistricting process to rebalance district populations. So far, 29 of the 201 House and Senate members have announced plans to step aside or run for another office.
