Lisa Smith talking 'anti-western stuff' and promoting Islam, says former colleague - The Irish Times

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

Lisa Smith, a former Defence Forces member who denies membership of Islamic State, told a fellow soldier that the Irish government were “all a shower of bastards” while talking “anti western stuff” and promoting Islam as “the way forward”, the Special Criminal Court has heard.

The court also heard Ms Smith was described by a superior officer in the Irish army as “industrious, hard-working and reliable”.

Ms Smith (39) from Dundalk, Co Louth has pleaded not guilty to membership of an unlawful terrorist group, Islamic State, between October 28th, 2015 and December 1st, 2019. She has also pleaded not guilty to financing terrorism by sending €800 in assistance, via a Western Union money transfer, to a named man on May 6th, 2015.

Pat Reilly, appearing in court via video-link from Australia on Monday morning, told Sean Gillane SC for the prosecution that he was a member of the Irish Air Corps from 1991 to 2013. On 12 February 2011 he was on guard duty with Ms Smith at the Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel when Irish people were being repatriated from Libya following an uprising there.

The witness recalled Ms Smith was saying “anti-western stuff” against western governments and the Irish government. Mr Reilly told the court the accused said, “we are being controlled by these people” whom she described as being “all a shower of bastards”.

Mr Reilly remembered going to get his weapons and ammunition and recalled Ms Smith sitting next to him and talking about Islam. He said: “She was saying it’s the way forward and had I ever read the Quran and that I would have to get a copy of it and that it’s the way to go.” He said she borrowed his laptop and showed him Youtube videos of people in the Middle East including what he thought were members of the Taliban doing manoeuvres. He said Ms Smith’s talk about these issues was “constant” through the 24-hour guard duty and that other Armed Forces members commented on what she was saying.

Mr Reilly told Justin McQuade BL, for Ms Smith’s defence, he was “generally aware” in 2011 that Ms Smith was in the process of converting to Islam.

He said he would not be surprised to learn Ms Smith’s superior officers described her performance as “very good” and that in November 2010 a colonel described her as “industrious, hard-working, reliable, working in a sensitive area providing a VIP service.”

The court also heard from Jake Samson, an agent of the Australian Federal Police. He told Mr Gillane he was involved in a counter terrorism operation relating to a man named Robert Edward Cerantonio. In May 2016 Cerantonio was arrested and later pleaded guilty to taking part in preparations for an incursion into the Philippines to promote hostile activities. He was sentenced in May 2019 at the Supreme Court of Victoria to seven years imprisonment with a minimum time to be served of five years and three months.

David Henderson told Mr Gillane he is a leading senior constable with the Australian Federal Police. As part of the investigation into Cerantonio, he said he downloaded images and screen grabs from a phone belonging to Cerantonio. There will be legal argument relating to the Australian federal officers’ evidence on Tuesday.

The trial continues in front of Mr Justice Tony Hunt, presiding, with Judge Gerard Griffin and Judge Cormac Dunne.

Cowboys rout Alcorn again to complete sweep - American Press | American Press - American Press

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

Keeping it all in perspective, the Cowboys did what they had to do over the weekend against a struggling opponent.

Sunday McNeese State wrapped up its four-game weekend sweep of Alcorn with a 23-1 thumping at Joe Miller Ballpark.

During the series, McNeese outscored the Braves 67-3, outhitting them 47-11 as all four games were shortened to seven innings.

“We were able to stay focused,” said McNeese head coach Justin Hill. “We threw the ball well again and we played good defense the entire weekend.”

As for the offense, the Cowboys got plenty of help while improving to 6-2 as Alcorn fell to 0-4. Braves pitchers walked 31 Pokes and hit another 15 during just 24 innings of McNeese offense.

“We were able to get some extra people some opportunities and they took advantage of it,” said Hill. “That’s good to see. We still have some work to do on offense, but we did what we had to do.”

The Cowboys finished with 16 hits yesterday. Transfer second baseman Brad Burckel led the way going 4-for-5, scoring four runs and driving in three. He raised is batting average to .444.

Jordan Yeatts drove in runs with a pair of hits, including a triple. Payton Harden was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and scored twice. Harden, who was dropped in the order, responded by going 8-for-15 with nine RBIs.

“I got back to myself and just thought about going back up the middle,” said Harden. “I don’t care where I hit, I just want to do what is best for the team.”

Issac Duplechain got the win for the Cowboys, allowing just two hits while striking out four in two innings of work. The win was the right-hander’s first decision of the year.

McNeese put the game away early with eight runs in the first. Schuyler Thibodaux’s 2-run triple was the big blow.

Yeatts’ 2-run triple was the highlight of McNeese’s second 8-run inning of the game, this one coming in the fourth. The Cowboys finished by scoring three runs in each of the last two innings they batted.

In all, five Cowboys finished the game with at least two hits while six pitchers combine to strike out 10 Braves.

McNeese will hit the road for the first time this season Tuesday when they travel to Baton Rouge to play Southern. They will return home for a weekend series against Louisiana Tech starting Friday night.

At IBM, ‘I saw longtime friend and colleague thrown overboard’ - The Boston Globe

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

Re “IBM e-mails about making ‘dinobabies’ extinct confirm what older workers already know” (Opinion, Feb. 22): Joan Vennochi’s column is spot-on.

As a now-former IBM employee who joined the company via an acquisition, I saw a longtime friend and colleague thrown overboard. He had been honored for his service and expertise by the original company that IBM had acquired. IBM didn’t care that he had helped make that company a success and useful acquisition.

He fixed the most gnarly problems that nobody else wanted to touch and was punished for fixing a lower quantity of bugs overall. After he was told he wasn’t needed, we walked in the parking lot. He wept. What a terrible way to treat a valued employee.

The day after he left, he started at a consulting firm that recognized his value.

Why Starting a New Job Feels So Awkward - Harvard Business Review

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

When you’re first starting out in a new job, it can feel awkward. Even if you have effective onboarding, you might not be sure what to say, who to talk to, or how to figure out what you need to know. And you’re not alone. Most people struggle with discomfort in the first few days, weeks, or even months at a new gig. The author shares three psychological reasons that explain why these transitions can be uncomfortable as well as ways to overcome the associated challenges – or to help smooth the way for a new hire who just joined your team.

Starting at a new job in a new workplace is exciting, but it can also be uncomfortable. Regardless of how many jobs you’ve had before, you may suddenly feel like the new kid in class, with all eyes on you. How can you overcome the awkwardness of those first few weeks? Is there any way to feel at ease when you’re brand new? And if you’re the one welcoming a new person to your team, what can you do to smooth the way for them?

It’s helpful to know a bit about what makes these transitions so difficult so you can mitigate the awkwardness.

Your prediction engine fails.

The most significant source of awkwardness is that you just aren’t sure what to expect. The brain is a prediction engine. It wants to accurately forecast what’s going to happen, and a lack of confidence about the future creates anxiety. (That’s the same reason why foreign travel is often more fun in retrospect than it is in the moment.)

When we’re uncertain about what will happen, we default to inaction. This is for two reasons. One, our anxiety motivates us to avoid potential threats or calamities. Two, when we do experience bad outcomes, we’re more likely to blame actions we take rather than things we fail to do. So we convince ourselves that not doing anything is less likely to cause problems. As a result, when you’re not sure what’s going on, it can be difficult to start conversations with new colleagues or to speak up.

This tendency to remain silent is made worse by concerns that you’ll say the wrong thing. Even when we’re talking to people we know well, we tend to avoid saying things we think might be misinterpreted. As it turns out, in reality, people focus mostly on the intent behind what you say rather than the specific words you use to say it. So, new colleagues are unlikely to form a negative impression of you, because they rarely notice the things you were concerned would be awkward. It really is ok to chat with your new colleagues and to ask questions when you’re confused.

To help ease the way for a new colleague, try to make things feel more certain. Introduce them to others in the office. Let them know how the workday ebbs and flows. If you’re working remotely, leave yourself a note to reach out to your new colleague at least once a day so that they don’t get lost in the shuffle.

You don’t know the language.

Even if you’re ready to speak up at work, there’s a whole set of jargon you’re probably unfamiliar with. Every organization has its acronyms for particular departments or processes — not to mention its own terms for people, places, and things. Those first few weeks at a new job can feel like you’ve been dropped into a country in which you speak enough of the language to feel like you ought to understand more of what’s being said around you.

It’s uncomfortable to stop people whenever they use a new term to get them to define it. And people who are fluent in their office jargon can spit out sentences that are completely incomprehensible to the uninitiated. (“I had to get EVPP and VPR to approve a PAR before sending it to OSP.”) So, it’s useful to get a translator. See if a colleague can put together a cheat sheet for you of commonly used acronyms and phrases in the company. (Some smart organizations even include this in their onboarding materials.) Then, get their permission to email or text them when a new phrase comes up that you don’t know. It will be reassuring to know you have a lifeline when you’re not able to fully follow ongoing conversations.

If you’re working with someone new, try to wrap your head around the beginner’s mind. It can be difficult to remember how steeped you are in your organization’s way of speaking. When you find yourself using some of the local jargon, use the term (so that your new colleague gets used to hearing it) and then define it (so that you don’t confuse them completely).

You don’t have a squad — yet.

Perhaps the hardest part of starting a new job is that you don’t have a group of people you feel comfortable with yet. Research suggests that having positive social connections at work is crucial to happiness and job satisfaction. You may see groups of people spending time together and talking about shared experiences, which can make you feel like an outsider, or even isolated. And, chances are, you don’t have a lot of practice integrating yourself into a pre-existing social structure, unless you’ve relocated a lot in your life. We generally only meet a lot of new people when everyone is in the same boat and creating a new social group (such as arriving at college as a first-year student).

Remember that it takes time, and everyone else there was new at one point too. You can start out by having conversations with a few people. Get to know them, and find out how the group engages. Are there coffee breaks or shared lunches? An easy way to meet a group of people is to get someone to serve as your ambassador and to introduce you to others. Don’t be afraid to ask someone to help you to meet your new colleagues. People are generally happy to agree to simple favors like this for their colleagues, especially new ones.

When you have a new colleague at work, help them to get settled into the social scene. You don’t have to commit to being a close friend or to spending time with them outside of work. Just help them to meet a few other people and include them in workplace conversations. It’s particularly valuable to make these introductions when people in the organization are working remotely. Most social interactions in remote workplaces have to be explicitly arranged, so it is easy for a new person to get left out entirely. Ensuring that new hires get connected to others also helps to improve retention.

Ultimately, remember that you are more worried about the awkwardness of being new at the job than anyone else is. The rest of your new colleagues are just going about their daily routines. The best part is that in six weeks or so, most of your anxiety will fade. You will develop new habits, you’ll discover you understand at least half of the new jargon that gets thrown at you, and you’ll have a couple of people who can guide you through the social scene.

SAG Awards 2022: Complete List of Winners - The New York Times

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

“We, deaf actors, have come a long way,” the “CODA” star Marlee Matlin tells the audience. On the TV side, “Succession,” “Ted Lasso” and “Squid Game” won big.

And the winner is … the Screen Actors Guild?

After a topsy-turvy few months that saw the Golden Globes reduced to live-tweeting and the Critics Choice Awards delayed to March, the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday found itself in the unusual (and influential) position of being this Oscar season’s first televised show.

In a diffuse year when many of the acting awards still feel up for grabs, that could spell good news for Sunday’s high-profile honorees, who included Troy Kotsur, named outstanding supporting actor for “CODA,” Ariana DeBose, best supporting actress for “West Side Story,” and lead-acting winners Will Smith (“King Richard”) and Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”).

Many of those winners were overcome at the recognition from their guild. “I’ve been a member since 2001, and now I feel like part of the family,” said Kotsur, who recalled nights spent sleeping in his car and dressing room.

Smith, considered the Oscar front-runner, began tearing up when the show ran a clip from “King Richard,” in which he plays the father of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams. “That may have been one of the greatest moments of my career just now,” Smith said, “because my name was called for ‘King Richard’ sitting next to Venus Williams.”

(On the television side, “Succession” and “Ted Lasso” won top cast honors, while Lee Jung-jae and HoYeon Jung of “Squid Game” took lead performer honors.)

Though the SAG Awards are considered among the more important Oscar precursors, recent winners have sometimes diverged from precedent. Both of the lead actors who took SAG Awards last year — Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis from “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” — lost the Oscar. And of this year’s SAG races, only one category — best actor — matched Oscar’s picks five for five. In the supporting categories, the overlap was much slimmer, and only two of the five SAG nominees also received Oscar nominations.

Still, the four SAG film winners are all contending for an Oscar, as is “CODA,” a film about a deaf family and its hearing daughter that is nominated for best picture. “You are all our peers,” signed the cast member Marlee Marlin upon accepting the best-ensemble award. “We, deaf actors, have come a long way.”

How many trophies has Liverpool won? A complete list of all major silverware in the Reds trophy case - Sporting News

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool topped Chelsea in a penalty shootout after a 0-0 final scoreline in the EFL Cup final this weekend, earning the season's first major domestic trophy.

The match was a thrilling one, with four goals ruled out by VAR and another host of good chances missed by both sides. Joel Matip saw a goal ruled out on a VAR review that put Virgil van Dijk offside for impeding Reece James, while a Romelu Lukaku extra-time winner was also cancelled for a slight offside on the delivery.

In addition to the win, Liverpool is still in the race to win the FA Cup, Premier League and Champions League as the season enters a crunch period.

MORE: How many trophies has Jurgen Klopp won? How many finals has he lost?

We look at how the Merseyside giants have fared in major competitions throughout their history.

PREMIER LEAGUE/FIRST DIVISION

•    Titles won: Nineteen (1900–01, 1905–06, 1921–22, 1922–23, 1946–47, 1963–64, 1965–66, 1972–73, 1975–76, 1976–77, 1978–79, 1979–80, 1981–82, 1982–83, 1983–84, 1985–86, 1987–88, 1989–90, 2019–20)

Liverpool is the second-most dominant side in English football in terms of top-flight title wins, just one behind arch-rivals Manchester United on 20. The Reds enjoyed an incredible run of glory through the latter half of last century, with 10 titles in 15 seasons between 1975 and 1990.

Klopp finally ended the club’s 30-year wait for a league title in 2020 as the Reds followed up their 2019 Champions League success with a long-awaited domestic league win. That season marked the first league title won by Liverpool in the Premier League era.

SECOND DIVISION

•    Titles won: Four (1893–94, 1895–96, 1904–05, 1961–62)

Despite its 19 top flight title wins, Liverpool also spent time in the second division in previous years, with three Second Division titles either side of the start of the 20th Century. The 1962 crown saw the club promoted to the English top flight, where the Reds have remained ever since.

FA CUP

•    Titles won: Seven (1964–65, 1973–74, 1985–86, 1988–89, 1991–92, 2000–01, 2005–06)

Liverpool is the joint-fourth most successful club in the history of the FA Cup, with seven wins putting the club level with Aston Villa, and behind Tottenham, Chelsea, United and Arsenal respectively.

The last FA Cup win came in the 2006 final against West Ham – later dubbed the Steven Gerrard final – after the England star scored twice, including a brilliant long-range strike in the 90th minute to level the tie at 3-3, before Rafa Benitez’s side won on penalties.

EFL/LEAGUE CUP

•    Titles won: Nine (1980–81, 1981–82, 1982–83, 1983–84, 1994–95, 2000–01, 2002–03, 2011–12, 2021-22)

Liverpool’s penalty shootout victory over Chelsea in this year's competition gives the Reds a ninth EFL/League Cup, overtaking Manchester City as the competition’s outright most successful club.

A penalty shootout win earned Liverpool's last EFL/League Cup trophy in 2012, following a 2-2 draw with Cardiff City. Klopp did reach the 2016 final in his first season at Anfield, but Liverpool lost on spot kicks against Pep Guardiola’s Man City.

FA CHARITY/COMMUNITY SHIELD

•    Titles won: Fifteen (1964*, 1965*, 1966, 1974, 1976, 1977*, 1979, 1980, 1982, 1986*, 1988, 1989, 1990*, 2001, 2006)
(* shared)

Liverpool has clinched the annual curtain raiser 15 times in its history, the third most successful club in the competition after United and Arsenal. Of course, reaching this competition requires earning a place, so that many crowning achievements is a seriously impressive achievement.

Klopp lost out in his only appearance in the competition in 2020 as Arsenal sealed a penalty shootout win after a 1-1 draw at Wembley.

•    Titles won: Six (1976–77, 1977–78, 1980–81, 1983–84, 2004–05, 2018–19)

Liverpool boasts the proud record of being the most dominant English club in Europe’s top continental competition with six titles, only bettered across Europe by AC Milan with seven and Real Madrid with 13.

The club's 2019 win in Madrid over Tottenham was Klopp’s first major title as Liverpool boss.

UEFA CUP/EUROPA LEAGUE

•    Three (1972–73, 1975–76, 2000–01)

The Reds have three wins in Europe’s secondary competition with their most recent win coming in 2001 after edging out a 5-4 thriller against Alaves.

EUROPEAN/UEFA SUPER CUP

•    Titles won: Four (1977, 2001, 2005, 2019)

Liverpool has followed up European success with a subsequent Super Cup win on four occasions, with a 2019 final win over Chelsea on penalties the most recent, coming after a 2-2 draw in Istanbul.

FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP

•    Titles won: One (2019)

Liverpool’s sole FIFA Club World Cup triumph came in 2019 as Roberto Firmino’s extra time goal secured a 1-0 win over Brazilian side Flamengo in Doha.

Sounders FC Announces Complete Regional Broadcast Lineup for 2022 Season - SoundersFC.com

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

Seattle Sounders FC today announced its complete regional broadcast details for the 2022 Major League Soccer season. Fans of the club can continue to follow the Rave Green through one of the most diverse slates in Major League Soccer, as Seattle maintains its relationships with all of its existing regional television, streaming and radio partners.

“We are excited to continue working with all of our broadcast partners this season, including FOX 13 and FOX 13+, Prime Video, iHeartMedia Seattle and El Rey 1360 AM,” said Sounders FC Owner & President of Business Operations Peter Tomozawa. “The dedication of these partners to providing unrivaled coverage and access across an array of platforms is a key ingredient to our ability to engage and connect with our fans. That connection is more important than ever in 2022, as Sounders FC kicks off the March to the 50th – a two-year rallying cry for the team and fans as we approach the club’s 50th anniversary in 2024. We have big plans on the horizon and we’re looking forward to collaborating with our broadcast partners as those plans come to life on and off the pitch."

MEDIA RESOURCES

In regional television, the club’s home remains FOX 13 (KCPQ Channel 13) and FOX 13+ (KZJO cable 10 / Channel 22), seeing FOX 13+ return as the primary television home for regional broadcasts of the Rave Green throughout Western Washington for the fifth straight season. All home and away Sounders FC matches for non-nationally televised broadcasts are available to in-market fans, with FOX 13 carrying four contests and FOX 13+ carrying the remainder of the schedule. FOX 13 and FOX 13+ continue to provide both a 30-minute pre-match show and 30-minute post-match wrap-up following each game.

FOX 13 is also carrying several Sounders FC specials during the 2022 season, including a Sounders FC Matchday program airing on FOX 13+ at 4:00 p.m. PT Sunday, February 27 ahead of the club’s opening MLS Regular Season match vs. Nashville SC. Additionally, FOX 13 is profiling the team during its weekly Seattle Sports Live sportscast, which airs Sundays at 11:00 p.m. PT on KCPQ following the flagship FOX 13 News at 10. Dating back to the first year of the partnership between the Rave Green and KCPQ in 2014, Sounders FC’s regional broadcast ratings have led Major League Soccer each season, a hallmark of the continuing relationship between the two organizations.

“FOX 13 is delighted to televise another exciting season of Sounders FC,” said Sheila Oliver, Senior Vice President & General Manager of FOX 13 and FOX 13+. “This team is incredibly dynamic and its fans are electric. I know we’re all cheering on the Rave Green as they make another run for the MLS Cup.”

Prime Video continues as Seattle’s official video streaming home in 2022, following a landmark agreement in 2020 that saw Sounders FC become the first professional soccer club to team up with the streaming service, as well as just the second sports franchise for which Prime Video secured regional broadcast rights (following Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees).

Prime Video is the exclusive streaming destination for the Rave Green, with all regionally televised Sounders FC MLS matches available on Prime Video to fans with a Prime membership throughout the entire state of Washington at no additional cost. Sounders FC’s regional broadcast territory extends throughout the entirety of Washington State – inclusive of the traditional Seattle-Tacoma-Everett television DMA and key population centers like Spokane, Yakima, Tri-Cities and Vancouver, Washington – allowing fans everywhere in the Evergreen State the opportunity to watch the Rave Green via Prime Video. Stream from the web or using the Prime Video app on your smartphone, tablet, set-top box, game console, or select smart TV.

New in 2022, fans accessing Sounders FC matches through Prime Video can watch the games in native 1080p / full HD resolution streaming content, the highest standard in the broadcasting and streaming industry.

Additionally, fans accessing the Rave Green through Prime Video can find club-specific content available via the dedicated Sounders FC team page, which houses live and archived regional Sounders FC matches, highlights, player interviews, press conferences and more.

“We are thrilled to continue as a premier hub for Washington’s dedicated Sounders fans,” said Marie Donoghue, vice president of global sports video at Amazon. “As the exclusive streaming home for the Sounders, Prime Video offers customers an unmatched viewing experience, whether they’re watching at home or on the go. We’re excited to kick off another great season with them this spring.”

Keith Costigan, Kasey Keller and Steve Zakuani all return to the booth in 2022, reprising their roles from past seasons. In his seventh year with Sounders FC, Costigan is once again set to call regional matches for the Rave Green, while maintaining his national duties with FOX Sports. Former MLS Sounders Keller and Zakuani return to their analyst duties, as the former United States Men's National Team goalkeeper and the 2009 first overall SuperDraft selection are set to work alongside a choice selection of rotating pre-match, halftime and post-match talent. Among this group are former Sounders Brad Evans, Marcus Hahnemann, James Riley and Lamar Neagle, as well as fan favorite and former FOX 13 sports reporter Michelle Ludkta, who returns this season to host home match coverage.

In radio, Sounders FC continues its flagship partnership with iHeartMedia Seattle for the fifth-consecutive season. All home and away Sounders FC MLS matches are being carried on Sports Radio 950 KJR AM or 1090 KJR AM, including a dedicated 30-minute pregame and 30-minute postgame show surrounding each contest. Additionally, the station is continuing its hour-long Sounders Weekly program, hosted by Jackson Felts and airing at 7:00 p.m. PT every Tuesday evening throughout the season, while Head Coach Brian Schmetzer joins Dave “Softy” Mahler and Dick Fain every Tuesday evening live at 5:45 p.m. PT.

“We couldn’t be prouder to continue bringing Sounders FC fans yet another season of club programming on Sports Radio KJR,” said Rich Moore, Senior Vice President of Programming for iHeartMedia Seattle. “The Rave Green’s supporters are unmatched in their passion for the club, and we’re excited for them to continue listening to all the action on 950 KJR AM, 1090 KJR AM and the iHeartRadio App.”

Introduced last season and continuing in 2022, match action audio for regionally televised games is being simulcast between television and radio, with radio listeners able to take advantage of the exceptional crew that the Rave Green has in Costigan, Keller and Zakuani. For nationally televised matches, the trio is calling Sounders FC games exclusively for the radio broadcast. As mentioned above, dedicated pregame and postgame shows continue to bracket every radio broadcast, with Jackson Felts leading those efforts and working alongside Pete Fewing, Danny Jackson and Diego Arrioja.

The club also continues its partnership with El Rey 1360 AM as the Spanish-language home for Sounders FC matches in 2022. With play-by-play voice "Zuper" Mario Rodríguez alongside Carlos Tapia and Felipe Maqueda on the call, El Rey 1360 AM is set to carry all 34 Sounders FC matches during the 2022 regular season. El Rey 1360 AM also offers 30-minute pre-match and post-match shows as part of its matchday coverage, as well as a 30-minute weekly radio show, Somos Sounders FC. The latter is hosted by Felipe Maqueda, and he is joined by Carolina Antipolo, Carlos Tapia and Marlo Vilela, airing Saturday mornings at 10:30 a.m. PT.

In addition, Sounders FC is in active conversations with longtime partner Univision-Seattle (KUNS-TV) to air a select number of match broadcasts and Sounders FC Fútbol en Vivo programs throughout the year. More information will be released in the coming weeks.

Seattle's 2022 MLS campaign begins this Sunday, February 27, as the Rave Green host Nashville SC at Lumen Field. That match kicks off at 5:00 p.m. PT and fans unable to join in person can tune in via FOX 13+, Prime Video, 950 KJR AM or El Rey 1360 AM. Expanded pre-match coverage on both FOX 13 and FOX 13+ is set to begin at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Ducks Complete Sweep Of UCLA - GoDucks.com

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com
EUGENE, Ore. — The Oregon men's basketball team only trailed for 3 minutes Thursday night in a 68-63 win over No. 12 UCLA at Matthew Knight Arena that gave the Ducks a season sweep of the Bruins.

With their NCAA Tournament hopes needing a big boost, the Ducks provided it by holding UCLA to .368 shooting and outrebounding the Bruins, 44-33. Oregon matched its season high with 19 turnovers but otherwise executed well, after entering the night on the outside of the tournament bubble looking in.

"I thought the effort was really good," UO coach Dana Altman said. "Franck (Kepnang), his effort in the first half carried us, got the crowd into it, really gave us a lot of energy. The turnovers took away that energy, but I thought our guys played really hard. At this time of year, that's all we can ask."

How It Happened: Coming off an 84-81 loss at No. 3 Arizona that was equal parts encouraging and demoralizing, the Ducks came out Thursday looking intent on both playing well and winning. Buckets from De'Vion Harmon and N'Faly Dante gave Oregon an early 9-6 lead, and two free throws from Jacob Young made it 11-6. The Bruins quickly tied it, but Eric Williams Jr. put the Ducks back in front with a corner three, and Young scored in transition for a 16-11 lead.

After a Bruins free throw, four points from Will Richardson got the score to 20-12. The Ducks had two turnovers in their next three possessions as UCLA closed within 20-16, before Williams hit another three to stop the bleeding. Oregon had a couple more turnovers as the Bruins scored six straight to tie the score at 27-27, but Oregon answered with an 8-1 run capped by a deep three-pointer from Richardson and the Ducks led 35-30 at halftime. Kepnang blocked three shots in a span of five UCLA possessions during the 8-1 run.

Oregon took its largest lead of the night early in the second half, with a 13-4 run to lead 48-35. That run included a dunk and a banked hook shot from Kepnang, and a three-pointer by Harmon. But after Richardson put back a miss for that 48-35 lead with 13:55 left, the Ducks went 1-of-11 from the field over the next 9:30 of game time. UCLA whittled down the lead, and when the Ducks turned it over three straight times the Bruins capped a 10-0 run to lead, 54-53.

The Ducks didn't flinch, though. Richardson put them back in front with two free throws, and Young ended the 1-of-11 shooting stretch with a midrange jumper for a 57-54 lead with 4:25 to go. After the Bruins completed a three-point play to get within 59-57, the Ducks scored on their next five possessions to seal the win — including a three-pointer late in the shot clock by Harmon, and a dunk from Williams set up by a lob pass from Young.

"Great players and great teams thrive under pressure, and we did that," Harmon said. "And we gotta do it again (on Saturday against USC). But we did it tonight."

Who Stood Out: Harmon led the Ducks with 17 points on 3-of-5 three-point shooting, and he grabbed six rebounds. Young had 14 points, five rebounds and six assists, and Richardson overcame a 3-of-13 shooting night to contribute 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals. Williams scored 11 points, and Kepnang finished with eight points, nine rebounds and three blocks.

What It Means: The Ducks badly needed a quality win to lift their sagging NCAA Tournament résumé, and they got it with a lift from a rowdy crowd fueled by an impressive turnout in the student section.

"The energy was great tonight," Altman said. "I keep talking to (the team) about one game — let's get ready and let's just play UCLA. And I'll be preaching the same thing (Saturday). They know where we're at; they know we're not in very good shape. Our only hope is to keep winning games. … I'm so thankful for the students. They were a big factor tonight, no doubt about it."

Up Next: The Ducks will host their final home game of the regular season against USC on Saturday (7 p.m., ESPN2).

Most Complete Simulation of a Cell Probes Life's Hidden Rules - Quanta Magazine

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

From the bizarre creatures in the depths of the oceans to the bacteria inside our bodies, all life on Earth consists of cells. But we have only a very rough idea of how even the simplest of those cells function.

Now, as described recently in Cell, a team at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and their colleagues have created the most complete computer simulation ever of a living cell. With this digital model, biologists can burst through nature’s constraints and accelerate their exploration of how the most basic unit of life ticks — and what would happen if it ticked differently.

“Imagine being able from one simulation … to recover results that would take many, many experiments to do,” said the senior author, Zaida (Zan) Luthey-Schulten, who led the group conducting the simulations at the University of Illinois. Using the model, she and her colleagues have already made surprising discoveries about the physiology and reproductive cycle of their modeled cell, and the simulation continues to serve as an idea generator for further experiments.

“This is the first time we can have a really careful computational look into a metabolism of a whole complex system — not just a biochemical reaction or a very artificial system but an entire living cell,” said Kate Adamala, a synthetic biologist and assistant professor at the University of Minnesota who was not involved in the study. For years, scientists have tried to model entire cells and predict their biology accurately, but they’ve fallen short because most cells are too complex. “It’s hard to build a model if you don’t know what Lego bricks go into it,” Adamala said.

But the cell that the Illinois group is working with is so simple, with far fewer genes than any other cell, that its physiology is more easily plumbed, making it an ideal platform for a model.

The cell in question is a lab-made “minimal cell” that teeters on the line between life and non-life, carrying a limited number of genes, most of them necessary for survival. By replicating the known biochemical processes happening inside this very basic cell and tracking all the nutrients, waste, gene products and other molecules moving through it in three dimensions, the simulation brings scientists closer to understanding how the simplest life form sustains itself and reveals some of the bare-bones requirements of life.

The findings are a steppingstone to building models of natural cells that are more complex and significant. If scientists can eventually build an equally detailed simulation of the common intestinal bacterium Escherichia coli, for instance, “that would be an absolute game changer, because all of our biomanufacturing runs on E. coli,” Adamala said.

A Digital Life

The minimal cell the team modeled, JCVI-syn3A, is an updated version of one developed by synthetic biologists at the J. Craig Venter Institute and presented in Science in 2016. Its genome is designed after that of the very simple bacterium Mycoplasmas mycoides, but stripped of genes that the project’s scientists systematically determined were not essential for life. JCVI-syn3A gets by with a mere 493 genes, roughly half the number of its bacterial inspiration and only about one-eighth as many as E. coli has.

Though simple, the cell is still enigmatic. For example, no one knows what 94 of those genes do except that the cell dies without them. Their presence suggests that there may be “living tasks or functions essential for life that … science is oblivious to,” said John Glass, a co-author of the new study and the leader of the synthetic biology group at the Venter Institute, and part of the team that developed the minimal cell in 2016. With modeling, the researchers hope they can quickly start to unveil some of these mysteries.

To build the new model, the team at the University of Illinois took an abundance of findings from various fields and wove them together. They used flash-frozen, thin-sliced images of the minimal cell to position its organic machinery precisely. A massive protein analysis helped them sprinkle all the right known proteins inside, and a detailed analysis of the cell membrane’s chemical composition, provided by their co-authors at the Dresden University of Technology in Germany, helped them place molecules correctly on the outside. A thorough map of the cell’s biochemistry provided a rulebook for the interactions of the molecules.

As the digital cell grew and divided, thousands of simulated biochemical reactions occurred, revealing how every molecule behaved and changed over time.

The simulations mirrored many measurements of living JCVI-syn3A cells in culture. But they also predicted characteristics of the cells that hadn’t yet been noticed in the lab such as how the cell portions out its energy budget and how quickly its messenger RNA molecules degrade, a fact that critically affects researchers’ understanding of how the cell regulates genes.

Some of the most surprising discoveries concerned the speedy growth and division of JCVI-syn3A cells. The simulation showed that to divide as rapidly as it does, the cell needs an enzyme called a transaldolase — but none seems to be present. Either the cell has evolved a metabolic pathway that makes the enzyme unnecessary, or “we are left with the possibility that there is such an enzyme, but that it does not look like an ordinary transaldolase,” Glass said.

He and his team are planning experiments to search for this mystery molecule, while also continuing to test some of the model’s other predictions. They have already confirmed, for example, that they can shorten the time between cell divisions simply by adding genes for two nonessential enzymes.

Remaining Unknowns

Not all of the simulation’s data agreed with experimental data — and the model has important gaps, such as the unknown functions of 94 of the genes. What’s more, the model is a fundamentally biochemical one, but “to fully understand the cell, we need to sort of model all of the forces and interactions of every atom or molecule of the cell,” Glass said.

He is discussing a potential collaboration with Roseanna Zia, an associate professor of chemical engineering at Stanford University, to build biophysical models of JCVI-syn3A that would examine how physics drives interactions inside the cells.

Though every model has its shortcomings, “what they’re doing in this study is so difficult and it’s so ambitious,” said Elizabeth Strychalski, who heads the cellular engineering group at the National Institute of Standards and Technology and co-authored the 2016 minimal-cell paper.  “It’s almost like we’re limited more by what we can imagine than by what we can do.”

With a complete enough model, the researchers should be able to get creative: They can see what happens if they prune biochemical pathways, drop in extra molecules or set the simulation in a different environment. The results should give more insights into which processes cells need to survive — and which they don’t. They might even offer glimpses into what the very first cells required billions of years ago.

Luthey-Schulten and her team hope to use the model soon to probe deeper questions about the minimum principles of life. For now, though, they are sifting through the data that the model has already provided. “Just the achievement of being able to put this minimal cell onto a computer, bring it to life and start interrogating it is exciting enough,” Luthey-Schulten said.

Perspective | A colleague found my email offensive, but I can't figure out why and I want to set the record straight - The Washington Post

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

Reader: A colleague called me on my personal cellphone to let me know that she found an email I had written to her, copying both our teams, disrespectful and offensive. I was surprised, because I had carefully composed it to be positive and diplomatic. I thanked her for calling, apologized for having inadvertently offended her and assured her that was not my intention. We are from different cultural backgrounds and generations, so we mutually decided to put it down to different communication styles and move on. All of us are working from home, so communications are via phone, email and video, which is not the same as in-person interaction.

Afterward, I reread my message, and I still have no idea why she was offended. In the call, she complained about my use of the word “shame,” which doesn’t appear in the email. I asked a few of my team members privately, and they weren’t sure what she had taken issue with either.

This colleague and I have no relationship beyond our current joint project, but my team and I have found her a little difficult. She often is not forthcoming with information and likes to name-drop her supposedly close relationship with senior management.

If what I said was offensive, I would like to understand why and make sure it doesn’t happen again. Also, if she was somehow reacting to a different message, I kind of want to set the record straight. It does not feel good to be called out by someone half my age for something I didn’t intentionally do. But I’m also not sure it’s a good idea to dwell on this. Is this a teaching moment for me or her, or should we all just move on?

Karla: File the email away and consider this one incident resolved for now. She addressed the problem offline with you; you apologized for the impact of your words, which was quite different from your intent; you both agreed it was a miscommunication.

Of course, one of the strongest impulses humans have is the urge to figure out who is actually Wrong. For fun, let’s pick apart the possibilities.

This could be entirely a “her” problem:

  • If she’s younger and trying to establish herself, she may be sensitive to any feedback that she feels undermines her, even if it’s valid.
  • Name-dropping is a classic sign of someone whose confidence and self-worth are based on their proximity to authority.
  • She may have had some bad experiences with a toxic former boss or family member, and something about your demeanor or wording triggers those memories for her. If she comes from a personal or professional environment of intense criticism and scrutiny, that might explain why she’s hypervigilant about critiques and closelipped about sharing information.

It might also be a “you” problem:

  • If you pride yourself on being a diplomatic communicator who strives to say the right thing in the right way, it can feel viscerally threatening when your words aren’t read as intended. That could be why you’re inclined to dwell on it. (Ask me how I know.)
  • If you overdo it on the positive feedback, people can often sniff out your real intent like a pill wrapped in cheese. (No judgment — many of us have been conditioned to serve every critique in a thick, fluffy compliment sandwich.)
  • If by “different cultural backgrounds” you mean she’s part of a relatively underrepresented demographic in your workplace, you may be inadvertently using loaded terminology or working from assumptions that have negative implications for people in her cultural cohort. Discreetly asking for feedback can help — but if you’re seeking it from teammates who tend to look and think like you, they will probably just confirm your viewpoint.

In saying it’s a “her” problem or a “you” problem, I’m not trying to pin blame. I’m talking about who is in the best position to find solutions. A “her” problem means it’s on her to identify and find a way to articulate what causes her offense, and request an alternative. Likewise, to rule out any “you” problems that may be blocking her message, it’s on you to ensure you are fully listening and seeking to understand what she thinks the problem is, regardless of whether you end up agreeing with her.

Again, I think you should consider the latest incident resolved — unless, of course, she wants to revive it, in which case you’re free to say, “I actually am still confused about that. You mentioned ‘shame,’ but I don’t see where I used that word.” But I’m willing to bet other opportunities will arise with this colleague. When they do, be ready to politely engage until you understand what the issue is and whether it’s a “her” problem, a “you” problem, or maybe a bit of both.

In the meantime, here’s a good rule of thumb for dealing with anyone with whom you have friction, on- or offline: Don’t assume malice; don’t withhold grace.

Chief Executive pays tribute to dedicated and much-loved colleague Carla - London Ambulance Service

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

It is with great sadness that I announce the death of our much-loved colleague, Carla Gray, who passed away suddenly on Wednesday 16 February.Carla photographed in her LAS uniform in front of an ambulance

Carla was 32 years old and a mother of two children.

Carla joined London Ambulance Service in 2015 initially working as a Trainee Emergency Ambulance Crew out of Deptford Group.

She progressed to Emergency Ambulance Crew level in June 2016 and moved to Greenwich Group two years later.

Carla had become a Newly-Qualified Paramedic only last month.

Carla will be remembered as a dedicated colleague and a dedicated clinician. She had worked hard to become a paramedic and was known for her caring nature which she extended to both colleagues and to her patients, who she treated with empathy and kindness. Carla was always there for her colleagues and crewmates and was a popular member of the team.

My thoughts and deepest condolences are with Carla’s two children Elliott, who is 14, and Isla, who is 4, her mother Daryl, twin sister Leah, elder sister Natasha – and all her loved ones.

I am also thinking of Carla’s colleagues and many friends here at London Ambulance Service and I extend to them my support during this tragic and difficult time.

Daniel Elkeles, London Ambulance Service Chief Executive

Longwood Overcome Six Run Deficit, Complete The Sweep Of Maryland Eastern Shore

Baseball /

FARMVILLE, Va.- The Longwood Lancers overcame six run deficit to complete the sweep of the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks.

"It feels amazing," said head coach Chad Oxendine on what how it feels to sweep a team in his first series in charge of the Lancers(3-0). "Again, the guys just continue to compete, continue to play the game the right way. We went down 7-1 and it would've been real easy to kind of shut it down and be happy with two wins. Instead, man, they continued to grind. In the bottom of the sixth we met and talked about not looking at the scoreboard until at the end of the game, but just continue to grind and play the game the right way, and we did that."

With a weekend that saw at least one big fly per game, none proved to be as crucial as Hayden Harris' 6th inning grand slam. The big shot saw the Lancers gain their first lead of the afternoon, and they never looked back. The Lancers bats were hot all weekend, as they scored more than 11 runs in each game, on top of at least 11 hits per game.

Dominick D'Ercole made his season debut for the Lancers, and finished the game with three innings pitched, and striking out 2. D'Ercole allowed five earned runs and gave way to Michael Tolson. Tolson gave up two runs on one hit in 2 innings of work. Nick Karlinchak came in for the seventh inning, and allowed one run in 2.1 innings of work. Sean Gibbons(1-0) also appeared in the game and earned his first win on the season.

The Lancers were led offensively by redshirt-sophomore Hayden Harris, who finished the weekend batting .462 and had eight RBI's. The Longwood offense made plenty of noise, including fellow redshirt-sophomore Eliot Dix's six-hit weekend that saw him tally five RBI's. Michael Peterson added a six hit, five-RBI performance. Jack Schnell concluded his strong weekend behind the plate batting .625 with five hits and UMBC transfer Dylan Wilkinson finished the weekend batting .364 and added an RBI.

The Hawks scored early, when Ryan Howe hit a two-run home run over the left center fence. Maryland Eastern Shore would add to their lead in the fourth inning through a Howe double that scored two.  Brantley Cutler would single home Howe later in the inning, to extend the Hawks lead to five.

The Lancers would respond in the home half of the fifth inning through an Eliot Dix double, that saw Michael Dolberry cross home.

The Hawks were not done adding to their lead. In the sixth inning McCoy had an infield single that scored Woodward and increased their lead to 8-2.
Longwood had a brief meeting where Coach Oxendine and his staff discussed playing baseball the right way, and the players listened. The Lancers loaded the bases before the first out was recorded, then Grant Melnyk was hit by a pitch to move the runners up a base, scoring one. Michael Peterson followed with a single to bring home another run and move everybody up a base, bringing the score within three at 8-5. Then Hayden Harris took a 1-0 pitch deep into left field that left the yard to give the Lancers their first lead of the game 9-8, and cap off an incredible 6th inning. The seventh and eighth innings saw three runs scored in both innings to increase the Lancer lead to 7. Dix and Dolberry had hits in both innings and helped prove the difference in the game.

The last Hawk run was scored when Horner drew a bases loaded walk, before JR Parrish finished Maryland Eastern Shore to clinch the sweep.

The Lancers start 3-0 for the first time since 2010, when Longwood swept Binghamton in Farmville. Longwood baseball takes the field again February 22nd at 4 p.m. when Virginia Commonwealth University visit Farmville for a one game series, that will be streamed on ESPN+.
