General Counsel Resigns After Accusations Of Slapping A Colleague At Holiday Party - Above the Law

Slap text in comic splash iconWell, of all the ways office holiday parties can derail your career, this is at least a unique one.

Denver International Airport’s now former general counsel Scott McCoy is out of a job after accusations that he repeatedly slapped another attorney at a holiday party on December 16th. According to anonymous sources cited by CBS4, during the festivities McCoy “jumped up and violently slapped” the colleague “in the face multiple times and yelled commands at him, nearly knocking [the attorney] out of his chair.”

But, according to reports, McCoy denies there was an argument. Instead, he insists this was a “role-playing exercise” on police de-escalation practices that went awry. Cue the side eye:

“At no point was there any altercation nor were there interactions involving personal conflict. My intentions were to further our mandates for improving equality and fairness through the demonstration of both proper and improper police conduct,” McCoy stated.

“While my intentions were good and I am very passionate about this topic, unfortunately it appears that at least one participant found the exercise embarrassing and inappropriate,” he added. “While I deeply regret that this was the case, my apologies were not sufficient to resolve the matter.”

He said his resignation was to “diffuse the situation and avoid distraction from the airport’s many other worthwhile projects.”

Mmmhmm. It sure was.

McCoy told the Denver Post that he did not strike the colleague, but that he remembered “touching [the other attorney] on the shoulder” and “waving my hand close to his face.” He also said he “shouldn’t have touched anybody without making myself really clear. That was a mistake.”

In a seemingly obvious admission, McCoy said he did drink alcohol at the party. But the twist is his statement that he was “absolutely not” drunk.

Denver City Attorney Kristin Bronson is serving as the airport’s interim general counsel.
