The Broncos have completed the eighth interview of their head-coaching search.
General Manager George Paton and Co. met with Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan on Thursday about the team's head coaching position.
Callahan, who has 12 years of NFL experience, has spent the last three seasons as the Bengals' offensive coordinator. During his tenure in Cincinnati, the Bengals gradually improved their scoring offense from 2019 to 2020 before breaking out in 2021. Behind former first-overall pick Joe Burrow, the Bengals posted the league's seventh-best scoring offense and passing offense this season.
Before arriving in Cincinnati, Callahan worked as the quarterbacks coach in Detroit (2016-17) and Oakland (2018). He began his career with the Broncos, where he served in a variety of roles — including as a coaching assistant, offensive quality control coach and offensive assistant — from 2010 through 2015.
During his last three stops, Callahan has worked with some of the league's best quarterbacks, as he's tutored Derek Carr, Matthew Stafford and Burrow.
"He's got two things that I think are really important, and that played out here to be very important in them turning things around," The Athletic's Paul Dehner told DenverBroncos.com. "He knows quarterbacks and the passing game as well as anybody you'll find, and that's huge. You go back and look at the quarterbacks he's worked with: [Peyton] Manning, Stafford, Carr, now Burrow. They've all had great seasons with him working directly with them — ascending seasons too, often. … [Reason number] two is a unique understanding of building a culture and building a locker room. … I don't know that you'll find two more important things for any head coach in this league in this era."
The son of former Raiders head coach Bill Callahan, the younger Callahan was a walk-on quarterback at UCLA before he entered the coaching ranks.
