SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – The Kansas State men's golf team scored an even-par 288 second round, and Tim Tillmanns had another impressive day at the Rich Harvest Farms Intercollegiate on Sunday.
Despite the two-stroke improvement from Saturday's round, K-State fell two spots into a tie for 10th place with the Cats' 36-hole total now at 2-over par 578.
"As a team we are making a lot of birdies, it's just the little mistakes that are costing us," head coach Grant Robbins said. "We are making too many bogeys with wedges and are having some issues three-putting, which is making it tough to get any momentum going."
While the Wildcats aren't in the position they wanted, there are still 18 holes remaining, and K-State sits just six shots back from the top-five amongst a tight leaderboard.
"It's a bunched up leaderboard, and if we can put together a complete round, we can have a solid finish," Robbins said. "Those things are all correctable, so I still feel good about where we are going tomorrow."
Tillmanns was exceptional yet again for Kansas State to stay in a tie for third place.
"Tim was really solid again today," Robbins said. "He has been very consistent with his ball striking and just steady overall."
Tillmanns carded a 1-under par 71 round on Sunday to bring his 36 hole total to 5-under par 139. The junior will have little room for error in the final 18 on Monday as he is tied with three other competitors in third place, but an individual crown is very much in play for Tillmanns who sits just one stroke shy of the lead.
Senior Will Hopkins had the best second round of any Wildcat on Sunday to make an incredible 25-spot rise into a tie for 24th place at 1-over par 145 heading into the final round. Hopkins carded a 2-under par 70 second round to put him in position for his second top-20 finish this season if he can put together another impressive 18 on Monday.
Luke O'Neill, a sophomore who was the team leader in stroke average (70.33) heading into the weekend, duplicated his opening-round score with another 1-over par 73 in round two to move up into a tie for 35th place at 2-over par 146.
Freshmen Cooper Schultz and Nicklaus Mason both recorded a 2-over par 74 round on day two. This score dropped Mason slightly on the leaderboard as he fell four places into a tie for 50th place at 4-over par 148, while Schultz, who's now in a tie for 62nd place at 6-over par 150, was able to make up some much needed ground and climb 14 spots with his play on Sunday.
Sophomore Ethan Miller, who is competing as an individual, improved five strokes from his first round to card an even-par 72 second round and rise 12 spots into a tie for 59th place at 5-over par 149.
Missouri ascended into first place as it shot a 6-under par 282 second round and hold a three-stroke lead over Wisconsin at 10-under par 566 heading into the final round. The Tigers were led today by Jack Parker, who carded the best second round of anyone at Rich Harvest Farms at 5-under par 67. Parker is tied in first on the 80-man individual leaderboard with Hunter Eichhorn of Marquette with a score of 6-under par 138.
The Rich Harvest Farms Intercollegiate will conclude Monday morning with a shotgun start to the final round beginning at 9:30 a.m. Fans can follow along live scoring at Golfstat.com
