Gomez opened the day with a 7-6 (10-8), 7-5 win over Samford's Olivia Jablonski to advance from the qualifying bracket to the main draw. Alabama's Petra Sedlackova defeated Gomez in the first round of the main draw, 6-1, 6-2.
Senior Madalina Grigoriu took the court for the first time, playing in the main draw. She lost in the first round to Northwestern State's Rozalie Dohnalova, 6-3, 6-3.
In singles consolation action, junior Oleksandra Balaba defeated South Alabama's Milka Pasanen, 6-0, 6-4. Sophomore Daniela Hernandez topped Louisiana Tech's Alexia Romero, 6-4, 7-5. Pereira beat Jacksonville State's Ella Tuomela, 6-2, 1-6, 10-5. Junior Jimena Paula Garbino lost to South Alabama's Caraline Scheufer, 6-4, 6-7 (7-3), 11-9.
Doubles action started with Gomez and Pereira picking up a win over UAB's Enya Ratkic and Annalisa Smith, 8-5. They will face Mississippi State's Tamara Racine and Emmanouela Antonaki in the second round at 9:45 a.m. Saturday.
Balaba and Grigoriu lost in the first round to UAB's Alexandra da Silva and Vanessa Mellynchuk, 8-7.
Hernandez and Garbino received a first-round bye and face Northwestern State's Rozi Dohnalova and Viktorie Wojcikova in the second round at 9 a.m. Saturday.
