Karla Radicke|Uvalde Memorial Hospital
Construction on the new Uvalde Memorial Hospital nears completion approximately two years after its August of 2019 groundbreaking. UMH marketing manager Karla Radicke said crews are currently working on finalizing equipment layouts while administrators fine-tune interior design details such as the art selection and floor plan. The new hospital target date of completion is Jan. 12, 2022.

Construction of the approximate 160,000-square foot new Uvalde Memorial Hospital facility is entering the home stretch, as the new Jan. 12, 2022, target completion date draws nearer and crews execute finish work and equipment layouts for the two-story building.

UMH marketing manager Karla Radicke said crews are working on installing flooring, sealing concrete in the electrical rooms, setting up equipment in the imaging area and finishing millwork throughout the first floor, which will house the emergency room, imaging, and administrative services.

Further, she said, they are installing the nurse call system and the sliding doors for the exam rooms.

Patient rooms will be housed on the second level of the hospital, where Radicke said millwork is underway. Tiling of the bathrooms is complete and has passed all testing, and the flooring installation is underway.

There will be approximately 25 in-patient beds and 19 out-patient beds on the second floor, which is roughly the same number of patient beds in the existing hospital.

The new rooms are expected to increase patient privacy and evolve the delivery of care to better accommodate patients, visitors, and staff.

On the exterior of the building, curbs are complete up to the main entrance canopy, and sidewalks are being poured.

Radicke said administrators have also approved all signage and it is under production, as is the furniture.

She said the hospital is working with an art consultant in the final stages of laying out the artwork. Administrators have also contracted with a company to oversee the move.

Phase two of the hospital replacement project will begin after the move, and the current building will be razed and the space utilized to better accommodate patients and visitors with additional parking.

The hospital has been under construction since its groundbreaking on Aug. 1, 2019, and was originally slated for completion in fall of this year. Radicke said with supply chain issues, the completion date was pushed to 2022.

To build the new hospital, UMH sought and was awarded funding from the USDA Rural Development Office in the amount of $58.5 million direct funding and a guaranteed loan of $16.5 million. The hospital intends to issue a series of 40-year revenue bonds in the amount of $75 million.

Bonds are backed by the hospital’s future revenues and there is no debt or obligation to the community.

Uvalde Memorial Hospital is a 501c3 not-for-profit organization, whose governing body is the Uvalde County Hospital Authority.
