For all the layers with which Riverside has been inundated in recent memory — from molding a young side to coaching turnover — good fortune and a complete 80 was bound to happen for the Beavers with time and patience.
Oct. 18 in a Division I sectional semifinal at North, the layers were blanketing in a thorough match performance that left the visitors rightfully pleased.
Jayda White and Eleanore Busch netted first-half strikes, and Lila Alban contributed an early second-half goal as Riverside was solid in all facets as it turned away the Rangers, 3-0.
The reward, such as it is, for the Beavers (7-7-2) is an Oct. 21 trip to always-formidable Hudson for a D-I sectional final.
But much like the stubborn lone star that shined out in the southwest sky at North, a moment to pause and enjoy was merited.

“That was absolutely one of our best games where we’re putting it all together,” Riverside coach David Shook said. “We tied (North) earlier this year, and they played so hard.
“And it’s something where anything in that WRC, there’s a little bit of rivalry where, going into a playoff like this, you don’t know what’s going to happen. You’ve just got to show up and work hard, and that’s what those players did for me today. They worked hard. They earned that one.”
The Beavers generated 11 shots on target in the match, eight after halftime, and took a deserved 2-0 lead out of the opening 40.
White’s opener was a classic workrate goal in the 27th minute. The promising sophomore striker deflected an attempted defensive-third clearance, played an ambitious first touch in and slotted her strike for her 13th goal of 2021.
“I’ve been working a lot on placing my shot,” White said. “Last year, I wasn’t as good at placing. I’ve been working on it a lot in practice. I feel like this year, when I get fast breaks, I really try to stay out of my own head. So I think that helped a lot.”

Riverside had been dangerous on an earlier corner and pounced on another set-piece look in the 33rd.
An initial shot after service into the right side of the box was blocked, but the bounce went to the edge of the six, where Busch slotted a banger for a 2-0 lead.

Alban’s right-footed strike in the 45th may not have been struck with the ferocity with which the junior was intending, but it made have been a blessing in disguise as that turned it into an outswinger high for the final margin.
“Yeah, I would say so,” White said when asked if it was one of the side’s most complete performances all fall. “We study a lot of film, and then we try to implement that into practice. And I think that’s what happened.
“I think we’ve improved a lot since (early in the season). It was a good outcome.”
The Beavers were playing without starting goalkeeper Piper Kanchok due to illness, so junior Lauren Rhoades was enlisted. Rhoades maximized her biggest moment of the match in the 67th.
Makenna Green played a pacey through ball for Sydney Helm for North (8-9-1). Helm got a good look at a right-footed strike, but Rhoades kept a good angle and preserved the clean sheet.
For Rangers coach Rick Sirl, he envisions a bright future with a side that featured six freshmen and sophomores in the starting 11 finding its way.
“I loved this season,” Sirl said. “We did something we haven’t done in years, get to .500. Throughout the year, they just had a lot of things that really give me hope for the future. This is a tough moment when you lose, 3-0, and it’s hard in that moment. But I think there’s things coming for us.”
