‘Bess Rich Way’: Mobile city officials honor longtime colleague - AL.com

The Mobile City Council voted Tuesday to name an entrance into a west Mobile park after a longtime colleague who is retiring later this year.

The council, with a unanimous vote, named the Hillcrest Road entrance into Medal of Honor Park as “Bess Rich Way,” in recognition of Councilwoman Bess Rich.

Rich, who was first elected to serve on the council as the District 6 representative in 1993, was a longtime advocate for Medal of Honor Park in her district.

She said it was the only park in her district, and that “all of my love went to that park.”

Medal of Honor Park, formerly known as Cottage Hill Park, is the only park in District 6 and is the second largest park in Mobile. The facility is available for football, soccer, baseball and softball. It also has a dog park, spray ground, playground, tennis courts, a walking path and picnic areas.

“I think my colleagues for this recognition,” said Rich. “It is most appreciated.”

Councilman Fred Richardson, who sponsored the resolution, said the renaming will not affect any address changes because no structural properties are located along the roadway.

“This is an unnamed road,” Richardson said. “No one is living on there so it’s not like we are trying to disrupt anyone’s service.”

Said Richardson, “This is great and hopefully in the future, we can find something to do better for Ms. Rich.”

Rich was a council member from 1993 to 2001 before unsuccessfully running for mayor in 2001. She returned to the council in 2010 and announced in May that she was not seeking another four-year term during the August 24 municipal election.

She served a total of 19 years on the council.
