Pomona, CA (AP) — A Southern California man who shot and killed two former target colleagues, including one who received the desired promotion, was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
Sergio Dufan Nelson, 46, was also sentenced to 35 consecutive years in a 1993 attack on an employee sitting in a car at a target store parking lot in Laburn, a suburb of Los Angeles. report.
According to court documents quoted by the newspaper, Nelson killed Robin Shirley, who was promoted, and Lea Thompson, who defended Shirley when Nelson harassed Shirley.
Nelson quit in September 1993 after failing to win the promotion. However, according to court documents, about three weeks later, he rode his bike to the store, shot through the open rear window, began to leave, and returned to fire more before escaping.
The defense alleged that Nelson acted in a hurry and impulsively because of Nelson’s failure to promote, severe depression, sexual and relationship problems, and “family dysfunction.”
Nelson was convicted of first-class murder in 1995 and sentenced to death. However, the California Supreme Court overturned his death sentence in 2016 and found that the judge interfered with the jury’s sentence deliberation.
The case was sent back to the judge for retrial after the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office stated that it would never seek the death penalty. District attorney George Gascon opposes the death penalty.
Shirley’s husband, Robert, said during a Pomona High Court ruling that Nelson had robbed his children of his mother, Sun reported. They were 6 and 10 years old when she died.
He said Nelson had left, but Robin Shirley had heard “rumbling and gasping” and returned to shoot her with his forehead.
“You deserve to die because of your timid behavior,” said Robert Shirley.
Thompson’s brother, Thai Thompson, wrote in a statement about the effects on the victims that the family strongly believed that Nelson should have been sentenced to death.
