After losing a tight series to 16th ranked UCLA over the weekend in Pullman, Washington State baseball was hoping to bounce back at home on Tuesday with a mid-week game against Portland. But that didn’t turn out to be the case.
The Cougs allowed 6 runs on 9 hits in the first two innings alone to dig themselves an early hole. WSU was able to answer, scoring the next 3 runs of the game, capped off by Nate Swarts hitting his first career home run to make it a 6-3 contest.
At one point, WSU was able to cut the lead all the way down to one run in the 7th inning, but Portland expanded their lead with three more in the 8th to seal the 10-6 win.
Pitching continues to be an issue for the Cougs. The team allowed Portland to rack up 10 runs on 15 hits. Most of the damage was done against starter Dakota Hawkins who pitched into the 2nd inning, allowing 5 earned runs on 6 hits.
And while the pitching wasn’t great, the defense didn’t help things out either. The team was responsible for 5 errors, including two on a single play in the 8th inning.
Fresh off of his Pac-12 player of the week honor, first baseman Kyle Manzardo was held hitless on Tuesday, snapping his 13 game hitting streak. He was able to earn a walk in the first inning, which extended his on-base streak to 22 games.
The loss is the third straight for the Cougs, who had previously won four-in-a-row before their skid. WSU will look to right the ship this weekend as they resume Pac-12 play with their final road trip of the season at USC. Game one of the three game series starts Friday night in LA.
