WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), who was a long-time colleague of the late Congressman Alcee Hastings (D-FL) in the House of Representatives, issued a statement today on the passing of her friend.
“Alcee fought against racial injustice as a civil rights lawyer before his election to Congress in 1992 where we served together for 28 years. He represented Floridians with his fierce advocacy for restoring the Everglades, supporting criminal justice reform, and protecting voting rights. As Vice Chair of the Rules Committee, Alcee was also a stalwart ally in passing D.C. Statehood. His presence in both Congress and the nation will be sorely missed.”
