Wenninger Throws First Complete Game Shutout, Racers Win Series - MSU GoRacers

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com
The Murray State Racers (10-9, 4-2) shutout the Jacksonville State Gamecocks (8-10, 1-2) in game two of the doubleheader, 11-0, after falling in the four-hour plus marathon game one 16-11.

With the split, the Racers reached the 10-win mark on the year and are now 10-9, 4-2 in OVC play. Jacksonville State moved to 8-10, 1-2 in the league.

The day was the opposite of yesterday's pitcher's duel as the Racers and Gamecocks combined for 38 runs through the two games.

Freshman Jack Wenninger threw a 101-pitch, complete game shutout in the rubber match as Murray State gave him plenty of run support, plating 11 runs on 16 hits.

Seven different Racers had multiple hits in the finale with Ryan Perkins leading the way going 3-for-4, setting a new career-high with seven RBIs and one run scored. Jake Slunder was also 3-for-4, scoring three runs and driving in one.

Game 1 – Jacksonville State 16, Murray State 11
The Racers picked up where they left off yesterday drawing five walks and scoring four runs in the opening frame.

Jacksonville State fought back from behind to even the game twice at seven and nine before pulling ahead.

Murray State matched JSU's three runs in the top half with three runs in the bottom half. Slunder walked and stole second to begin the inning, scoring on a RBI single from Perkins. Jordan Cozart walked and Brock Anderson singled to right, advancing all the way to third on an error by the right fielder. Both Perkins and Cozart came home on the play.

The Gamecocks got a single tally in the third and tied the game in the fourth on reigning OVC Player of the Week Alex Webb's first of two three-run home runs.

Murray State immediately took back their lead in the bottom half, an RBI single and an RBI double from Trey Woosley and Brennan McCullough gave the Racers a two-run lead, 9-7.

Again, the Gamecocks tied the game at nine with single tallies in the sixth and seventh. And again, the Racers had the answer with two runs of their own, both coming with two outs. Cozart, who was 3-for-3 in game one, singled to left, scoring Perkins from second. The Racers then used back-to-back walks to load the bases and a hit batsman scored the Racers eleventh run.

Jacksonville State got the best of the Racer bullpen in the eighth and ninth inning. The Game scored seven runs on six hits, including Alex Webb's second three-run homer of the game in the ninth to even the series at one apiece, 16-11.

The Racers' pitching staff used seven arms in the game. Sam Gardner made his fourth start of the season, going 2.1 innings, striking out two.

Game 2 – Murray State 11, Jacksonville State 0 (7 innings)
The rubber match for the series win was a different story from game one as Wenninger threw a gem, shutting down the Gamecocks offense allowing no runs on six hits. He didn't walk anybody and struck out four.

The Racers gave Wenninger plenty of run support in the third, fourth and fifth.

Murray State strung runs of four and five hits together in the third and fourth to get on the board with eight runs.

A double and two infield singles loaded the bases for Ryan Perkins who did not missed, lining the pitch back up the middle for his two of his seven RBIs in the nightcap. Cozart then plated Slunder to put the Racers ahead 3-0.

Murray State blew the game wide open in the fourth by posting a five spot. Five straight singles started the fourth for Murray State as Slunder, Perkins and Anderson all drove in runs, bringing the lead up to eight runs.

The Racers weren't done adding three more in the next inning. Alex Crump started the inning doubling down the left field line. Jordan Holly walked and Slunder had an infield single to load the bases for Perkins, who cleared the bases with a big double to right field.

The game was finished after seven innings due to the mercy rule.

Murray State returns to the road for the away portion of the Arkansas State series on Tuesday (Mar. 23). First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
