A fellow legislator jumps to the rescue.
Such was the case Monday, March 15, when Rep. Mike Beltz, R-Hillsboro, choked on his food while dining out with other freshman members of the North Dakota Legislature at Jack’s Steakhouse & Seafood in Bismarck.
“It was a normal evening until it wasn’t,” Beltz said. “Nobody panicked, which was good.”
Rep. Jared Hagert, R-Emerado, started administering the Heimlich maneuver on Beltz, and less than a minute later the life-threatening situation was over.
“We were just out for supper for the normal freshman class and a piece of food got lodged in his throat and he signaled for help,” Hagert said.
“(I was) concerned, but not panicked. I had confidence it was going to end well,” Beltz said. “I am very appreciative of my fellow representative’s action. I am fine — didn’t take long to get to joking about it.”
“We were happy we were able to help him out,” Hagert said. He learned the Heimlich maneuver more than 20 years ago, but until Monday he had never performed the tactic to save another person’s life.
After Beltz’s airway was cleared, the lawmakers went back to their meals, Hagert said.
“Believe it or not, we weren’t too shook up, we sat down and finished our meal. Nobody wants to have an event like that happen, just glad somebody was around so we could help him out. It’s ingrained in all of us as a society, just doing what we can when we need to do it,” Hagert said.
After what happened, Beltz and Hagert were recognized on the House floor Tuesday by Rep. Greg Stemen, R-Fargo.
“Hagert probably wasn’t well schooled in the Heimlich and probably wasn’t overly confident in his ability to administer the maneuver. What was more important than anything else, however, was that he had a willingness and a desire to help. We witnessed his help save another person’s life,” Stemen said.
