ALTADENA, CA — Two people were stabbed to death in an attack witnessed by a co-worker over a Zoom call Monday, and a victim's son was charged with two counts of murder, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.

The victims, both in their 60s, were brother and sister, Fox11 reported. The victims' names were withheld pending family notifications.

Robert Cotton, 32, was booked on two counts of murder in connection with the attacks, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Deputy Tracy Koerner. Cotton is the dead woman's son.

Police arrested Cotton at the scene. He was jailed Tuesday and is being held in lieu of $2 million bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Pasadena Superior Court, according to jail records.

A colleague was conducting the Zoom call with the woman when the attacks occurred, detectives learned. The colleague witnessed the woman being attacked and dragged offscreen, according to the sheriff's department.

The colleague called 911, Koerner said. The attack took place in the 3100 block of North Marengo Avenue in Altadena, and deputies responded at about 2:45 p.m. Monday. They found a dead man with stab wounds in the driveway. Inside the home, they found the body of a woman, investigators said.

Cotton returned to the house driving one of the victim's cars and identified himself as a resident, Koerner said. The vehicle was a Lexus SUV, sheriff's Lt. Barry Hall told the Los Angeles Times.

A motive for the stabbings was unknown.

Cotton is the second person to be charged with murdering a parent during a Zoom call since the pandemic began. Thomas Scully-Powers, 32, is awaiting trial in New York for stabbing his father to death as the victim's colleagues watched via Zoom in May, according to to Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy D. Sini.

Anyone with information about the stabbings was asked to contact the sheriff's homicide bureau at 323-890-5500. Tipsters who want to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
