SAN JOSE, Calif. - Jessica Donahue led Boise State past San Jose State 3-1 with 12 kills and team-high nine blocks as the Broncos (2-0) completed the weekend road sweep over the Spartans (0-2) in Mountain West Conference play. Boise State survived San Jose State's rally attempt from 24-15 down in the fourth when Donahue slammed the decisive kill through the defense to end an 8-0 Spartan run and clinch the set 25-23 and match 25-22, 25-18, 21-25, 25-23 for the Broncos.
"I think that going 2-0 is fantastic on the road after battling all the variables with the COVID pandemic the last couple months and even this weekend, it has been really trying for everyone," said head coach Shawn Garus. "I'm glad we were able to play and that these matches were tough. This weekend gave our young team a chance to learn how to deal with stressful situations when the opponent plays well while we are struggling. I think the last two sets today are definitely something we will be able to learn and grow from as we head into next week's home series versus Utah State."

After Boise State won the first two sets to take a comfortable lead, San Jose State rallied claiming the third to force the match into a fourth set. The Broncos took control early in the fourth and led 24-15 when the Spartans rallied with an 8-0 run to close within one at 24-23. However, Donahue came through when her teammates needed her, smashing the decisive point past the defense to finish it off 25-23 and hand the Blue and Orange the season opening weekend sweep.

Donahue led the team with 12 kills while hitting .423 and caused SJSU major problems at the net collecting a team-high nine blocks, her seventh career match with nine or more. Redshirt-freshman Annie Kaminski also had a solid match in her first career start at middle blocker finishing with nine kills, two blocks and hit a team-best .444.

"I thought both of our mids (middle blockers) Jessica and Annie did a good job and were solid for us offensively and defensively," Garus said.

For the second-straight match, Lauren Ohlinger led the team with 15 kills, matching her total from Thursday. She also had one service ace, seven digs and four blocks. True-freshman Kayly Pau tallied a team third-best 10 kills to go with one dig and a block.

But perhaps the biggest defensive influence on the match came from the back where Allie Casillas (13), Jordi Holdaway (14) and Jolei Akima (12) kept the Spartans at bay as the trio combined for 39 digs. In addition, setter Danielle Boss finished with her first double-double of the season on 40 assists and tied Holdaway for the high in digs with 14.

"I really want to recognize our defensive trio in the back today in Allie, Jordi and Jolei who did a nice job for us today," said Garus. "I also thought Dani (Boss) was effective today distributing the ball, when she chose to dump the ball and her digs defensively."

Overall, the match saw the Broncos hit 22.9 percent for 54 kills on 50 assists to go with five service aces, 66 digs and 11 blocks. San Jose State countered at 20.9 percent hitting for 54 kills on 51 assists with six service aces, 68 digs and six blocks.

Boise State will return home for the next two weeks when they host Utah State for two Feb. 12-13 and Wyoming for a pair Feb. 19-20.
