The city of Atlanta has finished the Bellwood Quarry reservoir project, meaning Atlanta now has an emergency water supply to serve as a backup lasting for a month or more.
Bellwood Quarry, before it was filled with more than 2 billion gallons of water from the Chattahoochee River, was used in a handful of TV shows and movies. It was a setting in “Stranger Things,” and “The Hunger Games,” among others.
Now the reservoir, which was finished late last year, holds a backup water supply, bringing Atlanta’s emergency reserves from an amount that would last three to five days up to a supply that will last between 30 and 90 days, according to the city.
To connect the quarry to a water treatment plant, the city used a giant, custom-built drill that was nicknamed Driller Mike, after the Atlanta rapper, businessman and activist Killer Mike.
Bellwood Quarry is located in what will eventually be Westside Park, which will eventually be the city’s biggest park. It’s near the Bankhead MARTA station, the Proctor Creek Greenway and the Microsoft development that was announced last week. The city has not yet announced an opening date for the park.
