Former President Donald Trump emerged from his hibernation at Mar-a-Lago this week, as he was photographed meeting with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who had previously conceded that Trump “bears some responsibility” for the attack on the U. S. Congress on January 6—a meeting that led naturally to sarcastic commentary on Twitter describing the meeting as a kissing of the ring:
On Thursday night’s edition of MSNBC’s The 11th Hour, Brian Williams began a segment on the meeting telling viewers “we are all about to see something for the first time, we have what I’m told is the first video of, exclusive video out of this meeting today between McCarthy and Trump,” Williams said. “We’ll watch it and react on the other side.”
What viewers saw wasn’t video from the Trump-McCarthy meeting, but a clip from the 1996 film Jerry Maguire, in which star Tom Cruise tells his co-star, Reneé Zellweger “I love you... you complete me.” He continues, but she interrupts to say “shut up. Just shut up.....You had me at hello. You had me at hello.”
The result—played off as oops, how did that video get in there—was quickly hailed on Twitter as a form of military-grade trolling of both McCarthy and Trump:
After airing the clip, Williams said dryly “that is obviously, we have rolled the wrong clip, and we were sold a bill of goods here, I thought this was going to be of the McCarthy and Trump meeting, and someone is going to be, of course, in big trouble.”
Of the meeting itself—the actual, real-life meeting in Florida, Williams was just as savage, saying that McCarthy had gone to West Palm Beach “to kiss the ring—and God knows what else,” describing Trump as “the deposed former president in his under-decorated Florida home.”
When Williams turned the conversation to guest Baratunde Thurston and asked him a question, Thurston responded “Brian, I’m still recovering from the video clip.”
