WASHINGTON, D.C. - History is being made today at the 59th inauguration ceremony at the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. as President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will be sworn-in. This year’s ceremony will be a lot different as it is not open to the public. The National Mall and the area around the Capitol are closed. Also, for the first time in 152 years, the outgoing president is not scheduled to attend as President Trump has said he will not be there.
Here is the tentative schedule of events for the inauguration:
11 a.m. - Joe Biden arrives at the U.S. Capitol.
Invocation - Father Leo J. O’Donovan
Pledge of Allegiance - Andrea Hall
National Anthem - Lady Gaga
Poetry Reading - Amanda Gorman
Musical Performance - Jennifer Lopez
11:55 a.m. - Kamala Harris sworn in as vice president by U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
Noon - Joe Biden sworn in as 46th president by Chief Justice John Roberts.
Benediction – Reverend Dr. Silvester Beaman
2:30 p.m. - President Biden and Vice President Harris will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton along with Michelle Obama, Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton.
3:15 p.m. - This year’s “Parade Across America” will now be virtual.
3:15 p.m. - Military escort to the White House for President Biden and the First Lady.
8:30 p.m. - Tom Hanks hosts “Celebrating America” on the major networks featuring remarks by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as well as performances by Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Demi Lovato, John Legend and Justin Timberlake.
