'Complete Streets' talk set for Thursday - Sequim Gazette

City consultants share possible options on Thursday to better “complete streets” on the south side of Washington Street to alleviate congestion, improve neighborhood streets and connect two Economic Opportunity Areas along U.S. Highway 101.

Framework staff, a firm that prior to and during the 2019 novel coronavirus pandemic worked with city staff on community engagement and design, presents preliminary design concepts on the South Sequim Complete Streets project in a virtual presentation and question and answer session from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21.

Sequim project engineer Dave Nakagawara said in mid-December that temporary, short-term installation projects were planned for last spring but delayed because of the pandemic’s outbreak.

Framework staff said their report includes concepts for several south Sequim streets, with some proposed immediate implementation projects and some for long-term capital projects.

The goal of the South Sequim Complete Streets project, city staff said, is to develop transportation concepts that support development and re-development while preserving the quality of life and livability of nearby neighborhoods.

The project is in conjunction with the city’s Comprehensive Plan from 2015 creating the Economic Opportunity Areas as an effort to diversify the Sequim economy, city staff said.

In previous community presentations, consultants said complete streets don’t fit just one concept but do balance needs for bicycles, vehicles, businesses and more.

Some recommendations include traffic calming measures, along with new sidewalks, lights, paths, bicycle lanes, street crossings, water and sewer utilities, stormwater management and more.

The project started as “the Prairie Street Connector Project,” but Nakagawara said staff felt the project should include more than just one street.

Community members also objected to Prairie Street seeing such a focus and a potential increase in traffic.

In December, Nakagawara said feedback to have a “totally connected neighborhood,” and improved existing infrastructure led city staff and consultants not to extend Prairie Street past Seventh Avenue.
