Roger Winter is an acclaimed Texas artist, and he was also an acclaimed professor, whose protégés at Southern Methodist University read like a who’s who of gifted painters. They include David Bates, John Alexander, Lilian Garcia-Roig and Brian Cobble, whose new show runs through Jan. 9 at the Valley House Gallery & Sculpture Garden in North Dallas.
In our recent interview with Winter, he spoke highly of Cobble, about whom he once said: “In a clamoring, market-driven world, Brian Cobble’s contribution is, indeed, blessed assurance to each of us that delicacy of drawing and subtlety of sight still exist.”
Cobble’s rare pastels are mesmerizing creations from the hand of a true perfectionist. As a result, his shows don’t happen every day. The last one occurred five years ago, in 2015, and the one before that in 2010. But when Cobble does unveil a new body of work, you can see why it’s worth the wait.
In assessing what motivates him, Cobble says, “Although photography plays an important role in my work, I’ve always thought the ultimate goal is not realism, but believability. The photos provide a starting point — sketches in effect — to be manipulated, exaggerated, added to or subtracted from, or blended with subject matter from other sources — or simply invented — to create an image that hopefully speaks to the viewer, but exists only in my imagination.”
