SALT LAKE CITY — Elder Gerrit W. Gong announced Friday that he and Sister Susan Gong have completed their quarantines 10 days after positive COVID-19 tests for the member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and his wife.

“We are very moved and grateful for the many well-wishes and prayers we have received from you from around the world,” Elder Gong said in two tweets. “Thank you for your faith on our behalf. Our doctors indicate we have now both successfully completed our quarantines.”

Elder Gong said he will return to his ministry next week.

“With continued precautions — for example, wearing a mask, frequent handwashing and social distancing — I look forward to returning to my full responsibilities next week,” he wrote in his tweet. “We are most grateful to you and look forward to being with you again soon.”

The church announced that Elder Gong possibly had been exposed to the coronavirus on Oct. 3, when he was scheduled to speak during the faith’s global general conference. Instead, it broadcast his prerecorded remarks while he remained at home and the church’s other senior leaders wore masks and sat in chairs arrayed to enhance the distance from one another.

A church news release on Oct. 6 said Elder and Sister Gong indeed had tested positive for COVID-19.

Then, on Oct. 8, another news release said that Church President Russell M. Nelson and the rest of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve had been tested and that the results of those 14 tests were negative.

Elder Gong has served as an apostle for 30 months and has been a general authority of the church for 10 years.
