Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that major construction is complete on a project to construct a new bridge carrying Route 63 over the Genesee River and create a modern concrete roundabout at the adjacent intersection with Court Street. The project, which began in June of 2019, will ease travel and enhance safety along a busy commercial corridor in Livingston County and facilitate access to the nearby SUNY Geneseo campus. Both the bridge and roundabout are now open to traffic following a short-term closure to implement the new traffic patterns.
"This new bridge and roundabout will benefit the entire Geneseo community and the thousands of commercial vehicles which travel along Route 63 each day," Governor Cuomo said. "This project is a fine example of building back better and safer and we will continue to make smart investments to modernize our infrastructure, enhance the safety of travelers and further connect communities across New York."
As part of the $8 million project, a new steel multi-girder bridge was constructed parallel to the existing 70-year-old truss bridge at the site, which allowed for limited traffic disruptions along Route 63 for most of the construction process. The new bridge features 12-foot-wide travel lanes, to better accommodate commercial vehicles along Route 63, and 8-foot-wide shoulders on each side of the travel lanes providing improved access for bicyclists and pedestrians.
At the nearby intersection of Route 63 and Court Street, the new concrete roundabout provides three points of entry. Roundabouts are engineered to maximize safety and minimize congestion. Compared to traditional intersections, traffic flows more freely through roundabouts, reducing traffic build up and commute times. Reduced vehicle idling time means fewer fuel emissions and improved air quality. Crashes at roundabouts tend to be less severe because they typically occur at slower speeds. Roundabouts also eliminate the need for electricity-powered traffic signals. NYSDOT has produced a video outlining how to navigate a roundabout, which can be viewed here.
State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said, "We are proud of this project which will enhance safety and improve access for students, staff and others who live and work near this critical transportation link in Livingston County. This is one of the many smart investments being made in the Finger Lakes Region by Governor Cuomo and New York State DOT - creating a safer and more efficient transportation system across the region."
State University of New York at Geneseo President and Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council Co-Chair Denise A. Battles said, "We are grateful to Governor Cuomo and the Department of Transportation for their prioritization of the project and expeditious work to enhance safety conditions on Route 63. The new bridge and roundabout are welcomed improvements and will ease travel for students, employees, and visitors who use the route to access campus."
Senator Patrick M. Gallivan said, "The state's investment in this project will help ease traffic congestion and ensure the safety of residents and visitors, including students and families traveling to and from SUNY Geneseo. The completion of the new bridge and roundabout is welcome news to the thousands of motorists who use the highway every day."
Assemblywoman Marjorie Byrnes said, "I am happy the construction is complete on the Route 63 project. I anticipate this will ensure the safety of our local residents, commuters, and commercial operators traveling through Geneseo."
While both the new bridge and roundabout have opened to vehicular traffic, construction activities are expected to continue through this fall to remove the existing bridge and complete miscellaneous tasks on-site.

Motorists are urged to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones. Fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. Convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual's driver license.

The State has already invested more than $8.07 billion in the region since 2012 to lay the groundwork for the plan - investing in key industries including photonics, agriculture and food production, and advanced manufacturing. Now, the region is accelerating Finger Lakes Forward with a $500 million State investment through the Upstate Revitalization Initiative, announced by Governor Cuomo in December 2015.
