The 49ers have established their initial season-opening roster.
On Sunday, they will compile their 16-man practice squad, which can include six players with unlimited NFL experience.
As far as the notable news from cutdown day:
* The 49ers have just 52 players on their roster, one fewer than they are permitted. Linebacker Fred Warner remains on the reserve/COVID-19 list and does not count against the roster limit.
* The 49ers placed defensive end Ronald Blair (knee) on the physically unable to perform list, meaning he will miss at least the first six weeks of the season. Blair was their top pass-rusher off the bench last year and his absence leaves them light at defensive end behind Nick Bosa and Dee Ford. Their top backup is Kerry Hyder. The 49ers released Dion Jordan, who did not have an impressive training camp.
* The 49ers activated wide receiver Deebo Samuel (foot) from the non-football injury list. This was expected as the 49ers haven’t ruled out Samuel for the season opener against the Cardinals on Sept. 13. Samuel would have had to sit out the first six weeks if he didn’t open the season on the active roster.
* Linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, a 2019 undrafted free agent who spent most of last year on the practice squad, made the initial roster.
* The 49ers waived impressive undrafted rookie running back JaMycal Hasty, who will land on the practice squad if he clears waivers. The 49ers kept four running backs: Raheem Mostert, Tevin Coleman, Jerick McKinnon and Jeff Wilson.
* Wide receiver Jauan Jennings, a seventh-round pick, was the only member of the five-man draft class to not make the 53-man roster.
