“I believed her amendment was in violation of the first amendment. Same right that gives those the right to protest is the same right that allows someone to sell a flag that I find abhorrent,” Koehler told the News-Sun.
He said that in his conversation with Brent he told her that the Legislative Service Commission informed her office that that the amendment would be a violation to the first amendment.
In a news release from Brent’s office she said of her exchange with Koeler, “He even went on to mention that if I introduce this amendment it would make him look like a racist. Why would I be concerned about that when confederacy memorabilia is a sign of racism and oppression?”
“Being a bully, condescending and lacking leadership seems to be the playbook he chose to play and as the Ohio House Republicans are discussing a new speaker they also need to appoint a new chairman to the agriculture and rural development committee,” she added.
Koehler told the News-Sun on Monday that he has never used a profane slur when referring to any member or staff member of the legislature.
“(Brent’s) representation of the events that took place is not accurate. I have encouraged a culture of civility in the Ohio House,” he said.
