Corrections officers mourn death of colleague who contracted COVID-19 - Michigan Radio

Corrections officers at Gus Harrison Correctional Facility in Adrian are mourning the death of one of their own from COVID-19.

Randy Rumler worked at the facility for 24 years. His local union rep, Mike Lennox, says Rumler was a family man, who was always there to help when people needed help.

Lennox says everyone who worked with him is shocked and upset.

"It hits home harder when it's somebody you really know, versus hearing about somebody you don't know," says Lennox. "You know what I mean, you don't know the person, you feel sorry for them, but it just doesn't hit you the same. It's personal when it's somebody you know."

The Michigan Department of Corrections says 31 other staff members at Gus Harrison have tested positive for COVID-19.

730 inmates at Gus Harrison have contracted COVID-19, and four have died.

A total of 68 inmates in all Michigan state prisons have died of COVID-19 since the pandemic hit. According to the Marshall Project, that's the third largest number of COVID-19 deaths of any state prison system, after Ohio and Texas.
