A Will County Board member said she filed a sexual harassment complaint against a fellow board member after a comment he made during a Democratic caucus meeting Tuesday.
The county board Democrats met remotely to discuss county business and to decide on a potential new speaker. During the meeting, member Rachel Ventura, D-Joliet, attempted to introduce Cesar Escutia, a precinct committeeman, to speak during the meeting about a vacancy on the board.
Majority Leader Mark Ferry, D-Plainfield, asked Ventura if Escutia was in the same room with her or if he was sitting on her lap. Ventura told Ferry his comment was "sexist."
Ventura said she filed the complaint with the Will County Human Resources director after the meeting on Tuesday. As of Thursday morning, she said it was unclear if elected officials filing such complaints was treated the same way as other county employees.
Ventura also accused Ferry of making other discourteous comments toward her in the past.
"I think this is not the first time that Mark has been disrespectful to me," she said.
She added that she heard from other board members after the meeting who said they felt uncomfortable about Ferry's comments and encouraged her to file a complaint.
"People need to just make sure that they're being respectful and doing the right thing," Ventura said.
Ferry declined to comment on Tuesday's exchange or Ventura's complaints of past comments.
A call to the Will County Human Resources Department on Thursday was not immediately returned.
