TRENTON, NJ – As New Jersey residents are adhering to strict social distancing guidelines put into place to help flatten the curve of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is evident there is work that can be done from home to help our community, state and nation, according to the New Jersey Department of State. From patronizing businesses by ordering delivery or arranging groceries for an elderly neighbor, there are ways to look out for each other while staying safely apart, encouraged the Department of State in a press release.
One more way residents can help each other from their own home is to complete the Census – it’s safe, easy and vitally important to New Jersey’s future, the release stated.
“As we battle the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s data will be more crucial than ever, providing us with funding to support those who are in need over the next 10 years,” said Secretary of State Tahesha Way. “An undercount in this year’s Census would be disastrous, resulting in communities only receiving a fraction of the aid they deserve and need, as we recover from this global health crisis.”
What’s at Stake?
Many federal funded programs are based on Census data, from emergency planning and response to investments in education, health care, infrastructure and economic development – areas that have been hit especially hard during this global crisis. Data collected from this year’s Census will determine whether New Jersey receives more than an estimated $45 billion in annual federal funds.
Census data is also used to redraw legislative districts and determine the number of seats New Jersey has in the U.S. House of Representatives. Fair representation for all New Jersey residents requires a complete count of our diverse communities.
“Now more than ever during the COVID-19 crisis, it is clear why our Census is so important,” said Secretary Way. “Census data helps us obtain needed resources and respond quickly and appropriately to public emergencies, like the one we are facing right now. The 2020 Census is a chance for New Jersey residents to shape the future of their communities, our state and nation as a whole. We need everyone to understand its importance, fill it out for themselves and encourage their friends and families to do the same.”
How to Complete Census
For the first time ever, Census responses can be answered online at 2020CENSUS.GOV, as well as over the phone by calling 844-330-2020 or through the mail. The Census only takes a few minutes to complete.
