PHOENIX — The Phoenix Police Department remains in the fog of processing the loss of one of its own — Cmdr. Greg Carnicle, a 31-year veteran of the force.

“I’m really trying to be here for my employees … trying to stay healthy for them,” Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s The Mike Broomhead Show on Tuesday.

Carnicle was shot and killed in the line of duty Sunday while responding to a domestic violence call.

“He was definitely a cop’s cop,” Williams said of her colleague and friend of 30 years.

Carnicle was the first commander in the department’s history to be killed on the job, and Williams said the department as a whole is still trying to wrap its mind around what happened.

The chief added that she’s encouraging personnel to check in with each other regularly during this time, and to remind one another that mental health services are available if needed.

Going forward, Williams said the department is pressing onward with heavy hearts, but that the loss of Carnicle could be a galvanizing moment for Arizona’s police force.

Two other officers — Marissa Dowhan and Alicia Hubert — were also injured Sunday but are recovering with the support of their families, Williams said.
