Colleague promises to carry Coburn's torch for health care transparency - Oklahoman.com

“Dr. Coburn was not only a dear friend, but also a mentor and an inspiration,” said Fisher, who worked closely with Coburn from then on to raise awareness among leaders in President Donald Trump's administration of the need for price transparency in health care. He became a vital member of her organization’s board.

Last June, Coburn joined Fisher in spearheading a letter signed by nearly 4,000 doctors supporting transparency. They hand carried the letter to the White House and to other key officials in the administration. On June 24, 2019, Trump signed an executive order to improve price and quality transparency in health care.

Coburn, who grew up in Muskogee and attended the University of Oklahoma medical school, was a family physician. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 2001 and in the U.S. Senate from 2005 to 2015.

“Even after leaving Congress in 2015, he never stopped fighting for what he believed in,” Fisher said. “Though we’ve lost a magnificent advocate, we will carry Tom’s torch,” she said. “We will continue to light the way for all Americans to have access to hidden health care prices, so we all can shop for health care by comparing prices and quality. That was his mission, and his efforts will not be in vain.”
