Utah Republican Sens. Mitt Romney and Mike Lee were advised to self-quarantine after having contact with Sen. Rand Paul, who tested positive for the coronavirus.
"Since Senator Romney sat next to Senator Paul for extended periods in recent days and consistent with CDC guidelines, the attending physician ordered him to immediately self-quarantine and not to vote on the Senate floor. He has no symptoms but will be tested. He urges members to pass a relief package as quickly as possible that provides assistance for families, workers, and small businesses," Romney's office said in a statement.
Sen. Mike Lee, who attended the Friday lunch with Paul, also announced he would self-quarantine after consulting with congressional physicians.
Romney said earlier Sunday he and his colleagues would seek medical advice as to whether they should self-quarantine.
“All the senators will seek medical advice as to what action we should take to make sure we don’t in any way spread this virus ourselves,” he told reporters at the Capitol.
Paul attended a Republican Senate luncheon on Friday with his colleagues. He was also spotted using the Senate gym on Sunday morning, according to reports.
The Kentucky lawmaker announced Sunday afternoon that his coronavirus test came back positive, making him the first senator to contract the illness, but his office denied that he got a workout in after learning of his diagnosis.
“He is feeling fine and is in quarantine,” the senator’s Twitter account said. “He is asymptomatic and was tested out of an abundance of caution due to his extensive travel and events. He was not aware of any direct contact with any infected person.”
He is the third member of Congress to become infected. Rep. Mario Diaz Balart, a Florida Republican, and Ben McAdams, a Utah Democrat, are both in quarantine after testing positive.
