Love Island star Mike Boateng has broken his silence on a racist incident that allegedly took place during his time in the police force, and claims a colleague called him a ‘gorilla’.
The 24-year-old, who found fame on the winter series of ITV2’s Love Island this year, was a member of the Greater Manchester Police force before his stint on the hit dating series.
While appearing on the show, it emerged that Mike had complained to the force about a racial slur that was used by a colleague.
Although his family spoke out about the incident, Mike had remained silent until now. He is set to detail what happened in an interview which will air on his YouTube channel this Friday (27 March).
In a teaser, Mike says: ‘My colleague [and I] were having a bit of back and forth during the exercise and out of nowhere, he called me a gorilla.’

When asked what the colleague said, Mike recalled: ‘“So are you going to get this gorilla to do the work for you?”
‘They came up with the defence that the term gorilla in the context that he used was an old policing term.’
Mike continued: ‘You don’t call another officer a gorilla.’
When news of the incident first emerged in January, GMP released a statement confirming that an investigation had taken place regarding a racial incident in 2017.
GMP said at the time: ‘We can confirm that in 2017 a serving officer alleged that he had been subjected to racist behaviour during his initial training with Greater Manchester Police.
‘Five officers were placed on restricted duties while the allegations were thoroughly investigated by the Professional Standards Branch. As a result, the five officers were dealt with under the Unsatisfactory Performance Procedure, which is set out in the Police Performance Regulations of 2012.’
The statement continued: ‘There is absolutely no place for racism within GMP. It is important that all our staff are treated fairly and with respect and we have made significant improvements to the diversity of our workforce over recent years.’
‘However, we realise the damage these instances can cause and we apologise for any suffering this matter has caused him.’
