Marshall urges Kansans to complete Census - WIBW

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Congressman Roger Marshall is urging Kansans to complete the 2020 Census.

Congressman Roger Marshall says the Census impacts the number of funding communities receive, how they plan and how representation is determined at State and Federal Levels.

“The Census is a small way for Kansans, no matter where they live, to have a big impact in their community,” said U.S. Congressman Roger Marshall, M.D. “Our founding fathers realized that the information gleaned by counting the citizens of this great country could help make important decisions regarding where to direct federal funding and how to best support all Americans. Schools, libraries, fire departments, and other vital social services are impacted by information collected by the census, which is why it’s important for every Kansan to participate. Every American counts.”

According to Marshall, U.S. Census workers and volunteers are currently working to ensure all Kansans are counted in the once a decade population count of the United States. He says he is encouraging residents to participate in the census to ensure communities receive the resources they need.

“The Census is so much more than a headcount – it will determine how much funding Kansas communities receive for critical areas like health care, education, infrastructure and more for the next decade. That’s why it’s so important for Kansans to fill out their census, so our communities can receive the support they need. It only takes a few minutes, but the impact will be felt for years,” said Representative Sharice Davids.

Marshall says federal funds, grants and support to states are based on their population, which is why participating in the census is so vital. He says when residents respond, it helps Kansas communities ensure they receive a fair and equitable share of the funding Congress provides to states.

“In our representative form of government, it’s critical to know where and how many of our citizens live throughout this great nation. To do that, our founders wisely put in place a decennial census to make sure all Americans are counted for fair representation and funding allotments,” said Rep. Estes. “The impact on each Kansas household is great, and we only have one opportunity every 10 years to make sure our voices are heard for the next decade. All Kansans need to be counted.”

According to Marshall, the result of the census helps to also determine how many seats each state gets in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“Critical federal resources that go toward schools, law enforcement, and other community services hinge on the results of a fully completed census. I urge all Kansans to ensure their families are accurately counted by filling out the 2020 census,” said Congressman Steve Watkins.

It is not too late to complete a 2020 Census form which can be completed by mail, by calling 844-330-2020 or online.

Irish woman shares hilarious image of colleague googling how to pronounce her name - IrishCentral

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

Irish names aren't easy to pronounce at the best of times, but pronouncing them under pressure in the middle of a work conference call is a whole different ball game, leading to this absolutely comical incident during the week.

An Irish woman, named Fionnuala, posted an image on Twitter where she had caught her colleague googling how to pronounce her name red-handed.

The woman's colleague shared her screen during a work video call but comically forgot to close a tab entitled "how do you pronounce fionnuala".

The Irish woman took a screengrab of the tab before the meeting came to an end and shared the hilarious image on Twitter alongside the caption "When your colleague shares their screen and they still have this tab open #irishnameproblems."

— Fionnuala (@Fionnuala_31) July 28, 2020

The tweet has since gone viral, amassing more than 21,000 likes and over 800 comments, many of which documented similar struggles of living in a foreign country with a distinctly Irish name.

Another woman, also named Fionnuala, hilariously tweeted that a surprising number of American colleagues addressed her by her surname only in emails, "as though that motley collection of vowels beginning with an F couldn't possibly be someone's first name."

Another Fionnuala told of how she was constantly called "Vanilla" by mistake and even produced photographic evidence of the mistake.

A number of Americans also responded to the tweet admitting that they had also googled the correct pronunciation of an Irish name.

Jonathan Plucker, for instance, said: "Full transparency: When I look up the pronunciation of my Irish colleagues' names, I do it on my phone specifically to prevent me from making this same mistake!"

Almost every Irish person who responded to the tweet agreed that the unfortunate colleague has shown great respect by making the effort to get the name right rather than butcher it during the work call.

The original poster, for example, was asked whether she found the incident offensive and said: "No, not at all! I usually make them guess first to see how close they are but it’s such a great conversation starter. I’m so proud of my name that I love being able to tell people how to say it!"

Iowa football program review complete | Iowa Now - Iowa Now

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

As was previously announced on June 16, the University of Iowa hired the Kansas City law firm Husch Blackwell to conduct an independent review of issues and allegations relating to racial disparities within the football program.

The review included interviews with former and current players as well as coaches, staff, and Department of Intercollegiate Athletics leadership. The firm, which has extensive experience in higher education, reported its findings to the university this week.

“I have read the report, and it is clear that the climate and culture must and will change within our football program,” says UI President Bruce Harreld. “Our student-athletes must have the ability to be true to themselves, and we cannot and will not tolerate a systemic process that inhibits authenticity.”

In addition to the report, Husch Blackwell provided the university with four personnel reports related to current and former employees that will be a part of those individuals’ confidential personnel records.

“We have identified the issues, we have and will continue to address personnel matters, and we have started and will continue the needed change in our football program,” says Harreld.

UND to require employees to complete online COVID-19 training - Grand Forks Herald

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

UND employees will be required to complete a mandatory online training related to the university’s COVID-19 safety measures.

Meloney Linder, vice president of marketing and communications, said the university has been sending out a lot of information about what the campus is doing to keep community members safe from COVID-19. The training ensures that faculty and staff understand what’s expected this fall.

“The effort is to keep everybody safe,” she said.

The training is about 40 to 45 minutes long and includes a 10-question assessment, according to a post on UND’s coronavirus blog.

All employees must complete the training prior to returning to campus, but no later than Aug. 31.

Students also will be asked to watch a video so they understand what’s expected of them. That video will be available next week, Linder said.

The university has been holding town hall meetings this week to answer faculty and staff questions. The meetings were conducted via Zoom and will be available on the UND website.

Meetings are being planned to answer questions from students and parents, who may have concerns about the upcoming school year. Those meetings will be scheduled for mid-August, closer to the university’s Aug. 24 start date.

Campus community members will be asked to wear face coverings while on campus as one precaution, along with increased sanitation efforts and fewer students in the physical classroom.

Kris Bryant helps Cubs complete franchise's first triple play in 23 years in loss to Reds - ESPN

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

Was is it a triple play or a trapped ball? Even Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant isn't sure after turning the team's first since 1997.

The Cincinnati Reds had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning on Wednesday night when Bryant seemingly caught a line drive off the bat of outfielder Shogo Akiyama. He stepped on third base and threw across the diamond for an easy triple play, but replays show the ball might have bounced into his glove or was trapped. At first, Bryant said he was sure he caught it.

"I'm not trying to sell anybody on a call," he stated after the Cubs' 12-7 loss. "If I dropped it, I dropped it. I thought they were able to review it. I guess not. I certainly thought I caught it. Looking back, it was really close."

Third base umpire Larry Vanover made the call, which isn't reviewable, simply because line drives in the infield don't qualify. Bryant said it was the first time in his life he's turned one.

"It was hard to tell," he reiterated. "I should have just thrown it to second and then to first. It would have been four outs."

The play didn't have much impact in the game as the Reds were leading by seven runs at the time.

"I don't think I've ever turned a triple play in my life so that was pretty cool."

The Cubs' 23-year gap without turning a triple play was the longest active drought in MLB.

Irish woman awkwardly catches colleague GOOGLING how to pronounce her name during online meeting - Irish Post

nnnindonesia.blogspot.com

AN IRISH WOMAN awkwardly discovered that a colleague of hers had 'googled' how to pronounce her name during an online video call.

The woman - named Fionnuala - noticed the gaffe during an online meeting when her colleague shared their screen with the group.

She spotted that a Google tab had been left open titled: 'how do you pronounce fionnuala?'

Awks ... as the kids would say.

To be fair, we here at the Irish Post think it's lovely that someone was polite enough to make an effort not to bastardise the pronunciation of an Irish name. Lord know how many phone calls our commercial executive Oisin has taken where a quick Google search could save a rather embarrassing first few seconds.

Despite the cringe, Fionnuala took the situation with good grace, and took to Twitter to celebrate the joys of having an Irish name.

"When your colleague shares their screen and they still have this tab open. #IrishNameProblems," she wrote.

Unsurprisingly, other Irish folk were quick to get in touch with her with their own stories of nominative embarrassment.

A Fearghal said he'd been called Fraggle, Frodo, Fuego, Fraga and even Virgil, while a Siobhan revealed she got the usual 'see-o-ban'.

Others noted that people would often skip their tricky first names and refer to them just by their surname in emails.

Delicious madness.

Thankfully though, Fionnuala insists she's not offended by the mistakes.

"I usually make them guess [how to pronounce my name] first to see how close they are but it's such a great conversation starter," she wrote.

"I'm so proud of my name that I love being able to tell people how to say it!"

Here here Fionnuala.
