ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team was dominant on both sides of the ball, cruising to a 7-0 rout against Ball State in its non-conference finale on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 2) in front of 456 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field.

Michigan (6-4) outshot Ball State 41-1 -- a Wolverines season-high for shots -- and posted a 12-1 advantage in penalty corners. U-M held the Cardinals without a corner or a shot until the final minute of regulation.

Sophomore Abby Tamer and junior Lora Clarke posted two goals apiece. Tamer, who leads Michigan with nine goals on the season, opened scoring at the 10:06 mark on a direct corner shot from the top of the circle and assisted on the first of Clarke's two second-quarter goals. Clarke fed the ball to the middle for Tamer, who spun and shoveled it toward the cage, and Clarke tipped it high from the left post at 17:00.

Clarke added her second less than four minutes later, at 20:58, on another rebound from in front of the cage. Sophomore/freshman Claire Taylor hammered the ball hard into the circle, and the Ball State goalkeeper played it, kicking it to Clarke, who batted it back in. She has career-high six goals on the season.

Michigan tacked on four goals in the third quarter, including two off deflections in the opening three minutes. Senior Nina Apoola knocked one in from the right post off a cross-circle pass from fifth-year senior Kathryn Peterson for her second goal of the season at 30:24, while Tamer netted her second of the game on a redirection from graduate student Tina D'Anjolell at 32:15.

Junior Kate McLaughlin, who earned two assists on the corner insert, got on the board with a reverse shot off her own rebound at 41:07 -- her third goal of the season -- while junior Erin Reilly closed out scoring a little more than a minute later (42:18) with a corner direct shot from the top of the circle. It was the first of the season for Reilly, who returned last weekend after missing time with injury.

All three Michigan goalkeepers saw time in the cage, while junior Serena Brimacombe earned a defensive save on the Ball State (4-3) corner late in the fourth quarter. BSU goalkeeper Hannah Johnston stopped 17 of U-M's 24 shots on goal.

The Wolverines will return to the road for a rivalry matchup against Michigan State next Friday (Oct. 7) in East Lansing, Mich. The game is slated for a 5 p.m. start at the Spartans' Ralph Young Field, and it will be streamed live on B1G+.
