BURNABY, B.C. - After winning the first set and dropping the second and third set, the Central Washington University volleyball completed a comeback to take down the Simon Fraser Red Leafs in five sets (25-23, 22-25, 17-25, 25-20, 15-13).

"The team did an amazing job and never gave up," Head Coach Mario Andaya said. "It was player led and they mustered the energy and urgency to get the win."

Tia Andaya recorded another double-double, leading the 'Cats in kills (16) and assists (27). Ashley Kaufman also logged a double-double, recording 15 kills and 15 digs.

"I can't say enough about Ashley and the load she takes on for the team," Andaya said. "SFU served 73 times and we set 51 times, along with defense and serving she does so much."

Emma Daoud-Hebert had 11 kills and led the team in blocks (6). Hannah Stires led the team in digs (30). Sydney Remsberg had 22 assists and 17 digs on the night. Scottie Ellsworth, Abby Snethen and Marianna Payne had five kills each. Ellsworth added three blocks to her performance.

The first set started close, with CWU taking a two-point lead at 6-4. The 'Cats broke it open, rattling off eight straight points to take a 14-4 lead. The Red Leafs started to get hot, cutting the deficit to 24-20 later in the set, forcing a timeout from the Wildcats.

Coming out of the timeout, SFU continued to apply pressure and took the next three points. But, Kylie Thorne came up clutch, delivering a set-sealing kill as the Wildcats took the first set 25-23.

Early in the second set, both teams were knotted up at 9-9. The Red Leafs went on a run, taking 10 of the next 14 points as the 'Cats fell behind 13-19. But, CWU responded with a run of their own. Kills from Kaufman, Daoud-Hebert and Payne helped the Wildcats take six of the next seven points, cutting the lead to 20-21.

The Wildcats continued to keep it close, as the score was 22-23 late. But, SFU wasn't going to squander the lead they had built, as CWU dropped the second set 22-25.

Both teams exchanged points to start the third set as the score was 10-10. The Red Leafs took eight of the next 10 points, as the 'Cats fell behind big 12-18. The Wildcats couldn't put together a comeback as CWU lost the third set 17-25.

Kills from Andaya and Snethen helped the 'Cats jump out to an early 6-0 lead in the fourth set, forcing a Simon Fraser timeout. After the timeout, the Red Leafs started to climb back, eventually cutting CWU's lead to 12-11.

The team's stayed neck-and-neck up to 17-16. Then, the Wildcats got hot, taking six of the next seven points, widening their lead to 23-17. Simon Fraser took three straight points to force a CWU timeout.

Out of the timeout, the 'Cats clutched up. A Daoud-Hebert kill followed by an SFU attack error won CWU the fourth set 25-20, forcing a fifth set.

CWU held a one-point lead halfway through the fifth set at 7-6. The Wildcats proceeded to go on a three-point run with kills from Daoud-Hebert and Thorne to take a 10-6 lead. The Red Leafs responded, taking five of the next six points to tie the set at 11-11.

Both teams traded points up to 13-13 and then the Wildcats found a spark when they needed it most. Kills from Kaufman and Payne clinched the final two points for the 'Cats as they won the fifth and final set 15-13.

The Wildcats (9-6, 4-3) return home next week with matchups against both Alaska schools. First, they'll take on Alaska Anchorage on Thursday, Oct. 6, at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 8, the Wildcats will face Alaska Fairbanks at 1:00 p.m.
