You don’t have to go far to find hiking trails in Worcester. Hike Worcester Week was created to let people know just that.
“Wherever you live in the city there is a hiking trail nearby,” Colin Novick, executive director of the Greater Worcester Land Trust, told MassLive on Monday. “A lot of people who grew up in Worcester have no idea that there are dozens of miles of hiking trails in the city.”
From Oct. 8 to Oct. 16, GWLT is highlighting Worcester County’s hiking trails with its fourth annual Hike Worcester Week.
Interested participants can register on GWLT’s website for a $25 fee, which includes a T-shirt. Once they are registered, participants can get their friends and family to pledge their support by making a donation to GWLT every time they complete a hike.
Participants can also take the opportunity to try and complete the Hike Worcester Challenge. Anyone who completes 10 of 16 trails that are designated as part of the challenge receive a patch, a decal and a certificate of completion and are added to the Hike Worcester Challenge honor roll, according to Novick.
The challenge includes two new trails, Blueberry Hill on the West Boylston/Holden town line and Difley Family Forest & Ilig Pond right off of the town common in Paxton.
Novick said his personal favorite is The Cascades, which has parking off Olean Street in Worcester. He said it’s his favorite not just because it has 110 ft. waterfall, but because it has a more rugged forested landscape.
During Hike Worcester Week, Novick said there will be formally-led group hikes for people to participate in for anybody that doesn’t want to go on a hike they’ve never been on before by themselves.
So far the group hikes that are scheduled include: Bovenzi Conservation Park at 9 a.m. on Oct. 10, Moreland Woods at 5 p.m. on Oct. 13 and Coes Knife Park to Hadwen Arboretum on Oct. 15 at 9 a.m.
More hikes will be posted on GWLT’s website Hike Worcester Week get closer, according to Novick.
The past three Hike Worcester weeks have been great, Novick said and have helped introduced people to the many trails around Worcester.
Even if you don’t register, Novick said people are still encouraged to get out and explore Worcester County’s trails during Hike Worcester Week.
