Game Recap: Football |

HONOLULU – Behind an impressive effort on the ground and a strong defensive effort, the University of Hawai'i football team picked up its first Mountain West win of the season with a 31-16 victory over Nevada Saturday at the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex.

The Rainbow Warriors (2-5, 1-1 MW) dominated the line of scrimmage, out-gaining the Wolf Pack 223-89 on the ground. The UH defense held its second-straight opponent to under 100 yards rushing while giving up a season-low 277 yards of total offense. Offensively, UH set a season-high in rushing yards with its first 200-yard ground game of the year led by Dedrick Parson, who matched a career-high with three rushing touchdowns and 136 yards on the ground.

Parson put the Warriors on the opening drive of the game, capping off a nine-play, 75-yard drive with a one-yard score. The 'Bows used a pair of explosive third-down plays to set up the touchdown, as Parson broke off a 26-yard run and Brayden Schager connected with Zion Bowens for a 25-yard pickup.

After Nevada (2-5, 0-3 MW) tied it up with a touchdown on its opening drive, UH answered right back with another scoring drive. Schager connected with Bowens on another downfield throw for a 48-yard touchdown to make it 14-7 at the 2:21 mark of the first quarter.

The Wolf Pack cut into the Hawai'i lead early in the second quarter with a field goal following a Schager interception, but the Warriors again answered with a TD drive. The 'Bows used a pair of big plays to jump start the drive, as Tylan Hines went for 30 yards on his first rushing attempt before Schager connected with Jaylen Walthall for 28 yards on the next play. Parson cashed in from nine yards out six plays later for his second score of the game to stretch the lead to 21-10.

The UH defense then held Nevada to a pair of field goal attempts, the second of which was missed on the final play of the half to make it 21-13 at the break.

Nevada struck first after halftime, converting a 20-yard field goal at the 3:19 mark of the third quarter as the UH defense got a stop with the Wolf Pack set up with a first-and-goal on the two-yard line.

On the ensuing drive, the Warriors went on a 16-play, 65-yard drive that ate up 8:06 of the clock capped off by a Parson two-yard TD run to make it 28-16 with 10:13 remaining.

John Tuitupou put the game on ice with just over four minutes left when he came up with a strip-sack of Nevada quarterback Nate Cox to set up a Matthew Shipley field, making it 31-16.

The Rainbow Warrior defense has turned in back-to-back stout efforts against the run, giving up 89 yards on the ground a week after allowing just 95 at San Diego State. Penei Pavihi and Hugh Nelson led the way with eight tackles each while Jonah Kahahawai-Welch recorded two of UH's season-high seven TFLs.

Hines added to the big day for the UH backfield, finishing with 70 yards rushing on 12 carries while Bowens led the team in receiving for the second straight game, catching four passes for 79 yards. Schager finished the night 13-of-25 for 173 yards while tossing a touchdown pass for the third straight game.

Up next, the Rainbow Warriors head back on the road to take on Colorado State next Saturday at 10 a.m. HT on Spectrum Sports Pay-Per-View.
